Thanks to Longtime Gardener Joanne Hochu for this tribute to Bob Sarti, much loved and missed: Sadly, one of our first groundbreaking gardeners Bob Sarti died this past Monday at his home on Hornby Island. Bob had a genetic blood disease thrombocytopenia which caused a debilitating stroke in 2014. Bob was 77 years old. Bob started in the gardens with his partner Muggs Sigurgeirson who was one of the founding members of Strathcona Community Gardens. He preferred working behin...d the scenes turning compost, picking blackberries and making chili for many of the Open Houses the gardens hosted over the years. He could be found digging ditches, working with the youth from the Environmental Youth Alliance and helping out with the honey extraction. He also chronicled from the start of the gardens, years of garden activities, taking pictures of events, gardeners, and the landscape. For his working career, Bob was a reporter with the Vancouver Sun but was also an activist in the Downtown Eastside and at Carnegie Community Centre, president of the Environmental Youth Alliance for 15 years and an advocate for prisoner’s rights. In his retirement, he continued his activism and wrote three plays based on Vancouver early 1970’s history: The Militant Mothers of Raymur, Bruce: The Musical and Yipppies in Love. In 2007 he and Muggs moved to Hornby Island, leaving the gardens. Bob loved the gardens and felt an affinity with the blackberries which he always pointed out were also known as rebel berries. He was an outgoing, fun loving, storytelling character and he will be missed. He is survived by Muggs, his son Doug, Doug’s wife Laurie and Bob’s grandson Frankie, as well as his sister Diane and her husband Don of Pennsylvania..

I got tons of ideas on what to cook with what one can find in the herb garden. What will you use next?
