This will be my last picture of a bull for a while, as they've started spawning and it's time to leave them alone and let them do their thing. This particular one gave me quite the tussle, immediately running downstream after hooking it. Eventually I got her turned around, but was into the backing at this point. Without knowing the story behind it, this looks simply like a couple of ordinary streamers. To me, it is a reminder of the friends and mentors that have had an influence on my fly-fishing techniques. Thirty-some years ago, I joined the Edmonton Trout Fishing Club and successfully infiltrated a subset of the members known as the Predators. One of them was a fly slinger that targeted Bull Trout and typically plied his trade in West-Central Alberta. At the time I did not know mu...ch about this species, as I caught them mostly by chance. We started fishing together, and he showed me his streamers and how to fish them. My skills soon improved, and I started to use these patterns and techniques successfully on other waters. Even though the patterns I now use are different, these original ones still occupy space in my streamer box. I was hoping to get some time-lapse of a storm that was developing southwest of Calgary, but it was still too early for anything dramatic when I arrived at Longview. I did find a huge storm cell shortly thereafter, charging out of the upper Sheep River valley and heading east.
