We have recently seen an increase in impaired driving incidents. From November 27th to December 31st, 2020, a total of 58 drivers in Greater Sudbury were charged with Impaired Driving! These drivers were impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both and we are extremely disappointed by these statistics. During that time period, 13 of those 58 Impaired Drivers were caught thanks to 12 Festive Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) spot checks conducted by our Tra...ffic Management Unit. In those 12 R.I.D.E. checks, a total of 5,447 vehicles were checked, also resulting in 114 Highway Traffic Act and Other Provincial Act Offences, as well as 10 Criminal Code Offences. The Greater Sudbury Police Service is committed to Road Safety in our community and as a result of our ongoing commitment; our Traffic Management Unit will be conducting the #AnywhereAnytimeRIDE campaign starting this month. Officers will be out conducting random R.I.D.E. spot checks during the day and at night, any day of the week to ensure drivers are operating vehicles both lawfully and safely. Several Charges Laid on New Year’s Eve, including: Assault Peace Officer, Resist Arrest, Operation while Impaired and Possession On New Year’s Eve, our Traffic Management Unit checked 371 vehicles in Greater Sudbury to ensure sober driving. In total, 12 Approved Screening Device tests and 11 Mandatory Alcohol Screening tests were administered; four Impaired drivers were charged; 18 Highway Traffic Act violations and five other Criminal Code charges were laid. At 8:45 p.m., pl...ain clothes officers observed a motor vehicle attend an establishment on Kathleen St, with both the driver and passenger of the vehicle appearing to be under the influence. After leaving the establishment, the driver and passenger switched seats in the vehicle so that the passenger was now operating the vehicle. A stop was subsequently conducted where suspicion was formed to believe both men were impaired by a drug. They were brought to GSPS headquarters where they performed drug recognition evaluations and both were found to be impaired by a drug. Search of the 30-year old man revealed that he had a small amount of purple heroin on him. As a result, he was charged with Operation While Impaired - Drug, Possession of a Schedule I Substance, Drive While Under Suspension and Novice Driver- Presence of Drug. The 25-year old man was also charged with Operation While Impaired, Drive Motor Vehicle - No Licence and Novice Driver - Presence of Drug. Both were issued a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. They will appear in court on March 10th, 2021 to answer to the charges. At approximately 2:30 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Barrington St. Investigation revealed that the driver was impaired. He was subsequently placed under arrest, at which point he resisted arrest and assaulted police. As a result, the 31-year old man was charged with Operation While Impaired, Failure to Comply with Demand, Resist Arrest and Assault Peace Officer. He was held in police custody to attend bail. It was also learned that he had a Canada Wide warrant for Conspiracy to Traffic in Controlled Substances. He was issued a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. At 2:35 a.m., a traffic stop was conducted with a vehicle on Mont Adam. The driver, who was a class G2 driver, had an odour of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath. The driver provided a breath sample into the approved screening device which resulted in 37mg of alcohol. As a result, the 19-year old man was served a provincial offences notice for Novice Driver B.A.C. Above Zero and issued a 3-day driver’s licence suspension. We thank all those who made the responsible decision to drive sober. Even one impaired driver is one too many. It’s just not worth it.

Are you winter-ready? Winter weather poses added risk to motorists. Weather conditions can be unpredictable and can place added demands on your vehicle and your driving skills. The best way to ensure a safe winter on our roads is to be prepared. If you haven’t done so already, now’s the time to start getting your vehicle winter-ready.... Get your vehicle winter-ready with a maintenance check-up. Have your tires, battery, belts, hoses, radiator, oil, lights, brakes, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers and ignition system checked. Make sure that your vehicle is mechanically ready for winter conditions. Keep your fuel tank sufficiently full at least half a tank is recommended. Always be sure you have sufficient windshield washer fluid in the reservoir. You may wish to keep an extra jug in the vehicle. Have your tires checked before winter begins. Remember to check tire air pressure, as it decreases in cold weather. Also, double-check the tightness of each tire’s wheel nuts to ensure your tires have not come loose; this is especially important for those who seasonally change their winter and all-season tires. Regular or all-season tires, including wide and high-performance tires, may be adequate in some areas, but we recommend using winter tires. They provide better traction, braking and handling during frost, snow, slush, and particularly under icy conditions. Installing four winter tires provides greater control and stability. Never mix tires of different tread, size and construction. Also, consider traction and stability control options when selecting your next vehicle. We recommend having a winter-driving survival kit in your vehicle, should you become stranded. Recommended items include: ice scraper/snowbrush, shovel, sand or other traction aid, tow rope or chain, booster cables, road flares or warning lights, fuel line antifreeze, flashlight and batteries, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, small tool kit, extra clothing and footwear, blanket, non-perishable energy foods e.g., chocolate or granola bars, juice, soup, bottled water, candle, matches or lighter. Sexual assault is defined in the Criminal Code of Canada as any unwanted sexual touching that occurs in circumstances of a sexual nature and violates the sexual integrity of the victim. If you are a Survivor of sexual assault, we recognize that this is a very difficult time for you. We are here to provide you with assistance and resources. Please read our Information Guide for Survivors of Sexual Assault, which includes options on how to proceed (I.e. if you choose to report ...or take no action), FAQs about Sexual Assault investigations, information about the Court process, and helpful resources available in Greater Sudbury: https://www.gsps.ca//Information-Guide-for-Survivors-of-Se Sexual Assault is the most under-reported crime and we continue to work diligently with our community partners in order to change that. In March of 2019 and through careful consideration and collaboration with our Sexual Assault Review Team, consisting of community partners who provide support to and advocate for survivors, we added a Sexual Assault online reporting option: https://www.gsps.ca/en/reporting/sexual-assault.aspx The online Sexual Assault reporting option is the only online report type that goes directly to our Criminal Investigations Division ensuring that the survivor’s first point of contact is a Detective specially trained in handling Sexual Assault cases. EDIT* For clarification purposes regarding this initiative and the Officers' interactions with community members, the area of Barrydowne Road and Lasalle Boulevard was selected based on Accident Support Services data collected indicating Barrydowne Road as being one of the City’s high-collision areas. When approaching vehicles, the Officers had their badges clearly visible around their necks and once they engaged a driver, they verbally identified themselves as being a Member of the GSPS Traffic Management Unit. Drivers were then directed into a public parking lot where a uniformed officer was present and visible. The goal of this initiative was not to frighten or sneak up on drivers, however, some drivers were caught off guard because they were focused on their mobile devices instead of their surroundings. Road Safety continues to be a top priority for GSPS. The Greater Sudbury Police Service reminds motorists that there is NO excuse for using a handheld device while driving. The only exemption is in the case of an emergency, you may use your phone to call 911. Pull off the road to a safe area to make the call. While you are driving, including when you are stopped in traffic or at a red light, it is illegal to: use a phone or other hand-held wireless communication device to text or dial you can only touch a device to call 911 in an emergency use a hand-held electronic entertainment device, such as a tablet or portable gaming console view display screens unrelated to driving, such as watching a video program a GPS device, except by voice commands You are allowed to use hands-free wireless communications devices with an earpiece, lapel button or Bluetooth. You can view GPS display screens as long as they are built into your vehicle’s dashboard or securely mounted on the dashboard. We thank all motorists who choose to drive responsibly. The text can wait. Save yourself the $615 fine, 3 demerit points and 3-day or 30-day licence suspension. #DontDriveDistracted

12 Stunt Driving Charges Laid Over the Long Weekend Operation Impact 2020, a campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world, began on Friday. Over the Thanksgiving long weekend, our Traffic Management Unit patrolled Greater Sudbury roadways with a focus on aggressive driving behaviours that put road users at risk.... A total of 12 stunt driving charges were laid. The highest speed captured was 186 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, which is over three times the speed limit. This motorist was caught racing another motorist, by one of our Traffic Officers working in collaboration with an Ontario Provincial Police Officer. Both drivers were charged with Stunt Driving and Race a Motor Vehicle. This year’s Operation Impact theme is: Safety Doesn’t Happen by Accident. Collisions are generally the direct result of a conscious decision that a driver makes. About 2,000 Canadians are killed by motor vehicle collisions each year with 10,000 people seriously injured. The Greater Sudbury Police Service is committed to making Sudbury roads as safe as possible. But we can't be everywhere all the time - it is a shared commitment with our community. Time to buckle up, buckle down, and drive safe. **Reminder: If you witness unsafe driving behaviours such as vehicles repeatedly speeding in your neighbourhood or in a specific area, please file an Unsafe Driving Concern via our online reporting system: https://www.gsps.ca/en/reporting/unsafe-driving-concern.aspx **We cannot accept reports through social media.

Hundreds of North Americans are killed each year in preventable incidents with trains. Chances of survival are slim for trespassers. Those who do survive often suffer from life-altering injuries, including amputation. Its #RailSafetyWeek - September 21-27, 2020 and today we teamed up with Canadian Pacific Police in #Sudbury to highlight safe practices around railway property: Always use designated crossings, obey active warning signals, and take the time to think about... what you cant see. Dont bike down or near railway tracks. Dont use railway tracks or the adjoining right-of-way as an ATV path. Never walk on railway bridges. Keep your pet on leash at all times around railway property. Only cross tracks at designated crossings. Railway lines are private property, and walking on them constitutes trespassing. The only safe, legal place to cross a rail line is at a marked grade crossing. Every rail crossing in North America has a 24-hour toll-free emergency number posted (1-800-716-9132). If you ever see something unsafe around the tracks, call immediately. If youre concerned about someones mental health and their interest in train tracks call your nearest mental health support line to get them help. If your vehicle is stalled on the tracks get out, get away. Call the emergency number on the crossing or 911. Just bought a brand new Smart TV as a holiday gift to yourself? Avoid flaunting your purchase on social media. This holiday season, reduce risk to your home and valuables by implementing some #safety tips: - Close blinds and curtains at night so that a burglar can't scope out your belongings. - Always keep your doors locked (front, sides, back and garage) and do not post a note indicating that you are not home... - Consider purchasing a home security system including an alarm system and video surveillance camera - Make your home look occupied at all times - Use timers to maintain normal lighting patterns - Ensure shrubbery is kept neat and trimmed (thick shrubs are a great hiding spot for thieves) - Also ensure there are no dark areas around the house, garage, or yard that could hide prowlers at night - Install fencing with a secure lockable gate to clearly define your property and prevent easy access to the back of your home - Install solid-core doors on all exterior doors with deadbolt locks - Make sure your doors feature wide-angle peepholes at heights everyone can use - Secure all sheds and outbuildings, making sure they are visible from the home - Keep windows locked and use a screw or block so they can’t be lifted - Keep spare keys with a trusted neighbour - NOT under a doormat or planter, on a ledge, or in the mailbox - Invest in bright security lighting and exterior motion-censored lights - Don’t advertise the new expensive items you just purchased on social media - Ensure your house number is clearly displayed so police and other emergency personnel can locate your house/business quickly - Be a good neighbour and keep an eye on your neighbour’s residence, especially if you know they will be away - Report any suspicious behaviour to police at 705-675-9171. Higher speeds = higher risks. People choose to speed for different reasons, including the rush experienced when speeding, because they’re running late, or because they think the speed limit is too low. The reality is, there’s no prize to be won for speeding instead, the faster your speed, the more likely you are to be involved in a collision.... Road collisions are the second-leading cause of death among young people in Canada. Young drivers (ages 16 to 24) killed in a collision are more likely to be speeding at the time of the collision than any other age group. We are not saying that ONLY young people speed speeding is an issue for people of ALL ages. This week, however, from October 18-24, 2020 is National Teen Driver Safety Week so the focus is on young people. Teens are more likely to speed when other teens are with them in the vehicle. Don’t put the lives of your friends and loved ones at risk by speeding. National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW) is an annual campaign to build awareness of teen driver safety issues and to encourage community and youth involvement as part of the solution. The 2020 theme: #SpeedIsNoGame. NTDSW 2020 will also focus on the issues of drug-impaired, drunk, distracted and aggressive driving and, new this year, rail safety. Speed limits are put in place for a reason: follow posted limits. Open or empty roads are not an invitation to speed. Adjust your speed to match the conditions of the road. Peaceful Resolution on Bruce Street After Man Barricades Himself on Balcony Shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2020, we received a call to attend an apartment building on Bruce Street regarding a man allegedly armed with an axe who was attempting to enter a unit within the building. Upon arriving on scene Officers found the man on the balcony of a unit located on the 15th floor of the building. The man was in emotional distress and there were concerns that the ma...n was a danger to himself, however at no point did Officers see an axe in his possession. Officers quickly secured the area and two Officers began speaking with the man from an adjacent balcony. Members of the Emergency Response Unit (Tactical Unit) trained in Crisis Negotiations arrived on scene and took over communications with the man. While speaking with the man, he told Officers that he had locked himself out of his unit and that he was cold. The man agreed that Officers could enter his apartment, unlock the balcony door and leave allowing him to go inside. When the man went inside his unit, Emergency Response Officers rappelled down onto his balcony to ensure that he could not go back outside, greatly reducing the risk of self-harm. Negotiators continued communications with the man until just after 9:00 p.m. when he peacefully surrendered to Officers. The 30 year old man was transported to hospital to receive the treatment and services that he requires. We would like to commend everyone involved in this call for de-escalating a volatile situation and coming to a peaceful resolution. Great work by everyone involved.

We sure do miss the sunshine! As the weather continues to cool down and rain pours, please make sure to adjust your driving to the road conditions. Rain makes road surfaces slippery, especially as the first drops fall. Make sure to slow down when the road is wet. Rain also reduces visibility. Drive slowly enough to be able to stop within the distance you can see. ... Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition. If your wiper blades do not clean the windshield without streaking, replace them. In rain, try to drive on clear sections of road. Look ahead and plan your movements. Smooth steering, braking and accelerating will reduce the chance of skids. Leave more space between you and the vehicle ahead in case you have to stop. In good weather conditions, it is recommended to keep a safe following distance of about 3 seconds, but in rainy conditions, following distance should be increased to 6 seconds. Did you know? Sudbury is home to Canadas FIRST ever plasma-only donor centre. Plasma helps treat patients undergoing extensive surgery, trauma, or those with bleeding disorders. Chief Pedersen, an avid blood donor, felt honoured to donate much needed plasma yesterday at the Sudbury plasma donor centre located at 944 Barrydowne Road for his new friend, Heydan. Heydan was diagnosed with a primary immunodeficiency called common variable immunodeficiency with hypogammaglobinemia.... His body does not make the antibodies it needs to fight off infections. As a result, every three to four weeks, Heydan receives intravenous immunoglobulin a medication made from donated plasma. The process for donating plasma is similar to donating blood. The main difference between a whole blood and plasma donation is the collection methodapheresis. Only the plasma portion of your blood is collected; the rest (red cells, white cells and platelets) is returned to you. Becoming a plasma donor can make a lifesaving difference to patients across Canada, who depend on treatments made from donated plasma. Tomorrow is the first day of school. School buses may not have been on your radar for several months now, but its time for motorists to get back in the habit of watching out for school buses on our roadways. Beginning tomorrow, several thousand students will be returning to school and the Greater Sudbury Police Service will be out conducting speed limit enforcement in school zones and patrolling for school bus stop violations. Our mission is to ensure the safe arrival and ...return of students who attend school within the City of Greater Sudbury through education and enforcement. Well be providing education in relation to road safety, school crossings, school buses and pedestrian safety. All school zone speed limits are posted at 40 km/h. Its a slow speed limit for a reason - you never know when a child could be running, walking, bicycling or playing in these areas and could accidentally step onto the road. Its a lot easier to make an unanticipated stop if you are driving slowly. The speed limits set in and around schools do not change when school is dismissed for the day. Speed limits are in effect 24-hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. Failure to stop for a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing can result in a fine up to $2,000 and six demerit points. Thank you to all motorists for driving carefully and cautiously.
