Giardia are microscopic organisms that are infectious to many animals including cats, dogs and humans. Giardia lives in the intestine causing watery diarrhea and cramping. Typically our pets get infected by drinking contaminated water when you are out for hikes, walks or even sitting in the water in your own backyard. Some pets are infected with Giardia and will not be sick at all but will be carriers of the infection. If your animal does get sick and Giardia is determined to... be the cause, we typically treat with a dewormer or antibiotic. It is also important that your infected pet is bathed at least once during treatment to remove any possible Giardia cysts from their fur. Disinfecting areas of your home like flooring and dog runs with a dilute bleach solution will help prevent reinfection. Be sure to also practice your own hygiene like hand washing after handling or washing your pet because you can also get Giardia. Always the best course of action is prevention. Carry water for your animal when you are out on walks and hikes to prevent any drinking from creeks, streams, rivers or puddles.
In recent years there have been many publicized incidents about the danger of leaving your pet in your vehicle on warm sunny days. Despite this, the BC SPCA and the RCMP continue to respond to countless calls each summer to help pets left unattended in vehicles. We cannot stress enough how quickly the temperature of your vehicle becomes life-threatening to your pet, it happens within minutes. It is crucial that you do not leave your pet in your vehicle in the summer heat. Being left in a vehicle during the summertime becomes life-threatening to your pet within minutes. This has everything to do with how they regulate their body temperature and how this is different from you or I. In an effort to keep our community as safe as possible for our pets we are reaching out today to advise everyone that in the last 48 hours we have treated 2 large breed dogs that were attacked by wildlife resulting in significant injuries. In one of these cases a cougar was witnessed attacking the pet. Given the extent of the injuries to both, a cougar is most likely involved in both situations. The attacks were in the Wilson and Roberts Creek areas. Wildlife encounters are uncommon. However, given the multiple events in a short period of time we wanted to remind everyone outside with their pets, especially at night, to be aware and use caution as most incidents occur when wildlife are caught off-guard by approaching pets.

What does COVID-19 mean for my pets? With the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in various parts of the globe, along with the heavy media coverage, it is important to objectively look at all of the information that is bombarding our social media, the internet, television and the papers. I wanted to address the concerns specifically from the perspective of a pet owner today. To do so, I strongly recommend everyone to have a read of the following article written by Dr. Scott Weese o...n his website: www.wormsandgermsblog.com The current situation is highly fluid as it seems to change almost daily as more information arises. I encourage everyone to contact us with any follow-up questions. Your pets' well-being is our primary concern. For more information we recommend that you seek information from leading public health authorities, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Public Health Agency of Canada and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC).

Ever heard of a Catio? Catios are outdoor enclosures for your cat that provide a rich environment. These are used instead of allowing your cats to roam outdoors to protect them from predators. They also are used for bird and wildlife conservation. Some people find the cat patio or 'catio' really solves their indoor/outdoor dilemma offering the best of both worlds for their pet.

Typically the term "Salty Dog" means best friend however, if you are outside with your pup, be sure to wipe those paws. They can get coated in rock salt and it's best if your animal isn't ingesting that. No Salty Dogs!
Wishing you all the best in 2020! Happy new Year!
