This week’s Story Trail book is The Elders are Watching. This beautiful book is written by David Bouchard, who wrote it to pair with Roy Henry Vickers’ paintings.
What a lovely fall day to get outside and de-stress a week to end all weeks! If you can't get outside today, then look at a nature photo (like these!) or listen to nature sounds (bird songs, babbling creeks, waves), even that has been proven to help relieve stress. #Natureisamazing
This week's Story Trail is the Sharing Circle by Theresa "Corky" Larsen-Jonasson - enjoy!
Our Story Trail book this week is The Eagle Feather by Kevin Locke. This book is perfect for preschool and kindergarten-aged children. The storybook and route will remain up until October 19.
Happy Halloween! Did you know that Halloween originates from the Celtic new year's eve festival of Samhain (pronounced Sow-in). Each October 31st the Celts held huge bonfires and dressed in costumes (animal pelts and horns) so as not to be recognized by the dead, who were said to visit the living on this night.
It's that time of year - the Arboretum is full of fall magic.
We're happy to now offer FREE, live, virtual school programs! Without leaving your classroom go on a tour of Green Timbers Park and explore the differences between salamanders and frogs (K - gr4) and forest edge habitat (gr4 - 7). Spaces are limited and will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis. We are currently just booking until December 17th and program availability is as follows: Tuesday and Thursdays at 9:30am, 10:30am and 1:30pm.... https://www.surrey.ca//school-programs-at-the-surrey-natur See more
Did you know that before the Surrey Nature Centre existed the land was used to grow seedlings for reforest around the province? In fact, one of the first orders was for 3,000 seedlings, which were planted in Stanley Park!
While I was putting up our Story Trail for this week I caught some crows chasing a Red-tailed hawk.

Did you know that not all cones are pinecones? It's true, only cones that come from pine trees are called pinecones. Check out these amazing tree cones that you can find around the Surrey Nature Centre.
The closest residential schools to Surrey are: - St. Mary's in Mission - it closed in 1984 (the last one in BC to close!) - Coqualeetza in Chilliwack/Sardis - it closed in 1940 (it was the largest residential school in BC) - St. Paul's in North Vancouver - it closed in 1958
If you're at the park this week, make sure to check out our Story Trail featuring the picture book Hike by Pete Oswald. Follow the pages around the park to enjoy a great story and nature at the same time - it's a win-win! Each week we will have a new route and a new story - next week will be The Golden Glow by Benjamin Flouw.

Today is National Tree Day! It’s a day to celebrate trees and all of the benefits they provide - clean air, wildlife habitat, reduction in energy demands and connections to nature. I love Pacific dogwoods, and how their branches are laden with flowers in the spring. What is your favourite tree?
Please expect some parking disruptions today if you are coming to the Surrey Nature Centre - we are paving the drive aisle of our new parking lot.
