While we enter into December, our thoughts are with those who have lost love ones, experienced hardships and are struggling financially, physically, emotionally, mentally and/or spiritually. We know times like these can bring out struggles that much more. On top of that, sometimes our emotional, physical or chemical stress can take effect on our bodies. Remember it is important to always make sure you are taking care of your body, mind and soul before you can help others. So ...if you're feeling a bit run-down, here are some things you can do to make sure you're taking care of yourself. And if none of these work, give me a call and book a tune-up! - Amanda 604-588-6505

Combine Water and Walking for Heart Health By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDS The film "Gerry," staring Casey Affleck and Matt Damon, tells the story of two men who wander in the desert without food or water. The movie bewildered film critic Roger Ebert, who said the more he watched it, the less he liked it and the more he admired it.... What we admire is people who know how good it is to walk, but who are smart enough to stay well-hydrated. Those qualities are the keys to a longer, healthier life according to two young new studies. The first followed almost 16,000 people age 44 to 66 for 15 years, and found that staying well-hydrated every day prevents chronic elevation of blood sodium levels in midlife - which can damage your heart structure and function, and are associated with heart failure 25 years later. To stay hydrated, women need at least 54 to 71 ounces of water a day and men at least 68 to 101 ounces. The second study looked at 33,000 heart patients, average age 62 at the start, for around seven years. It found that those who got active (for at least 150 minutes a week) lowered their risk of death from all causes by 45% and of death from cardiovascular disease by 27% compared to folks who were never active. So make sure you're drinking plenty of water, and whatever your age start a walking routine, building up to 10,000 steps daily. Then you won't miss a beat as you head into older age. #healthandwellness #water #walking #healthylifestyle #Gerry #heartfailure #hydration #droz #womenshealth #menshealth #cardiovascular #oldage #newstudies #stayhydrated #walkingroutine

A big thank you to all our Practice Members who have been so gracious to send a card or gift this Christmas season! We always appreciate it. Also wanted to say a huge thank you to Loreen and Jill T for your donations to our Christmas Tree Charity that we throw every year! Some great points in this article from Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen. A couple important tips they forgot to mention is to include at least an hour of physical activity and make sure you keep a schedule to bring some routine back, especially if you are not working or working from home. Defusing COVID-19 Anxiety By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs... Since the beginning of April, comedians Rachel Parris and Marcus Brigstocke have been tweeting videos of themselves performing elaborate lip-syncs complete with over-the-top choreography and costumes at #LockdownLipsync. They're fighting off the COVID blues and helping others do it too. Unfortunately, there are many people still riding the corona coaster that up-and-down feeling of uncertainty, anxiety, and helplessness that comes from worrying about your health and the health of those around you, as well as employment, social isolation, finances, your children's education, and more. A survey conducted by Sharecare found that 91% of people have been impacted by feelings of worry, 20% reported extreme stress, and there's been a whopping 230% increase in the number of folks who feel anxiety. An American Psychiatric Association survey found that nearly 40% of Americans fear getting sick or dying from COVID-19, and 62% are anxious about a friend or family member falling ill. For your immediate and long-term health, it's essential that you find ways to relieve your stress and anxiety. We suggest you: Start your morning with 10 minutes of meditation. Consider psychological telemedicine. Many practices offer virtual talk therapy; there are also online-only therapy apps. Stay connected with friends and family via phone or video chats. Sometimes easing anxiety is as simple as seeing a familiar face and having a few laughs. Start a new hobby or project; it will provide distraction, gratification, and a sense of expanding horizons, even if they're just digital.

Check out this article by Dr. Oz. Some interesting thoughts on how exercise affects your brain. Exercise Keeps Your Brain Young By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs... You can't separate the mind and body, Jack LaLanne once told USA Today. LaLanne sometimes called the Godfather of Modern Fitness lived to be 96, and learned early in life that exercise (combined with proper nutrition) could make your body and mind both feel significantly younger. In his heyday, critics called LaLanne a nut and a charlatan. But it turns out he was right. A study in the journal Neurology reveals that sedentary folks 55 and older with cognitive impairment (difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering) can turn back the clock nine years in just six months by doing aerobic exercise such as walking or cycling for 35 minutes three times a week. Executive functioning, which refers to neurologically-based skills involving mental control and self-regulation, was the feature that showed the most notable improvement. The very best cognitive improvements came for people who followed that exercise routine and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet a low-sodium, high-fiber nutritional plan that includes lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, low-fat dairy, 100 percent whole grains, and lean proteins. While this wasn't a major study, it echoes the findings of another study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center that suggested physical fitness is associated with stronger neuron fibers and better executive function in people with mild cognitive impairment. Other research has found that aerobic exercise increases the volume of the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for memory. So join an exercise group and have some fun. As George Bernard Shaw said: We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Woman History Month - March 16, 2020 Justice Bertha Wilson (19232007) First woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. Born into a working-class family in Scotland, Bertha Wilson trained in law in Canada. When appointed to the high court in 1982, she already had a track record as a justice with the Ontario Court of Appeal, where she was known for her humane decisions in areas such as human rights and the division of matrimonial property. During her nine years on the Supreme Court, she helped her male colleagues to understand that seemingly neutral laws often operated to the disadvantage of women and minorities. She thus helped usher in groundbreaking changes to Canadian law. Photo: Copyright Cochrane Photography

Woman History Month - March 13, 2020 Angelina Napolitano (18821932) Brought domestic abuse to national awareness. Little is known of Angelina Napolitano’s tragic life, outside of the fact that she was an Italian immigrant who in 1911 killed her abusive husband with an axe as he slept, was convicted of murder, and was sentenced to hang. Since abuse could not be used as a defence, the case ignited enormous debate and a flood of petitions asking that her life be spared. It brought the battered woman defence into the spotlight and highlighted inequities in the law. On July 14, 1911, the federal Cabinet commuted her sentence to life imprisonment. She was granted parole in 1922 and is believed to have died in 1932. Photo: Lina Giornofelice pictured as the lead character, Angelina Napolitano in the 2005 movie, Looking for Angelina.
