Don’t forget! At 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, Daylight Saving Time ends. Clocks should be moved back one hour. "Change your clocks change your batteries" is a great way to remember to keep your home's smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in working order.
We’re pretty proud of these two! Make sure if you see them around town to congratulate them on their well deserved retirement! They’ve weathered a lot of responses and changes in the fire service, yet they remained dedicated to their community! We thank you for your service, Tommy & Clayton! According to our friends at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly half (49%) of home fires are caused by cooking. This #FirePreventionWeek, we...’re highlighting why it’s important to serve up safety in the kitchen! This video shows actual footage from our ongoing research burns taking place at our DELCO facility -- showing the growth and spread of a kitchen fire. Make sure you have working smoke alarms, know your escape plan, and continue to #CloseBeforeYouDoze! This experiment was conducted in preparation for the DHS/FEMA funded Study of Fire Service Residential Home Size-Up and Search & Rescue Operations. The experiment took place in a purpose-built test fixture that represents a residential, single family home with 4 furnished bedrooms, a living room, dining area, and kitchen. Instrumentation was placed throughout the home to examine fire spread from a kitchen fire and its impact on occupant survivability. The fire was ignited by heating a pan of cooking oil to its ignition temperature. The fire spread into the wall cabinet adjacent to the stove and subsequently, the adjacent cabinets. Pieces of flaming cabinet proceeded to fall to the ground igniting the base cabinets and flooring. As the fire extended across the ceiling, it ignited additional cabinets which led to flashover of the kitchen. For more fire safety tips, visit closeyourdoor.org!

Many house fires start with overloaded washers and dryers. Overloading either appliance will burn out the motor or cause equipment failure. Hey Parents & Guardians! It’s #FirePreventionWeek! Normally the Sussex Fire Department would be going into local schools this week to share the message of Fire Prevention Week! Due to COVID-19 restrictions that can’t happen. But that’s where we need your help!... Children in K-3 from Sussex Elementary School, Sussex Corner Elementary School, Apohaqui Elementary School and Sussex Christian School have been forwarded materials regarding fire prevention week. We have a favour to ask of you. Be looking for these materials and have that safety conversation with your children. Check to make sure you have working smoke detectors and also work on a fire escape safety plan (know two ways out) for your family and those under your care. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. You can make a difference! Kids learn best in a hands-on, interactive way. At Sparky.org, kids can find games, activities, and more to help them learn essential fire safety while playing games they will love. Visit: http://www.sparky.org/

Join the Sussex Fire Prevention Week 2020 Community Contest! It’s Fire Prevention Week 2020 and things are a little different this year due to Covid-19! So we decided to have a little contest to help spread our message of Fire Prevention and life safety! The challenge is this: 1) Take a look at the list of talking points from the NFPA about Fire Prevention (see attached link below). 2) Pick one you would like to highlight and display the message in your storefront window... or in your front office this week. 3) Include the hashtag #FirePreventionWeek in the display. 4) Spice it up and be creative in sharing your Fire Prevention message with your staff, organization and the public. 5) Take a photo and send it via messenger to this page. One entry from the community will be selected and displayed right here on our Facebook page giving credit to your business or organization for helping us to share Fire Prevention in the community! There may even be some small prizes for your team! So get out there this week and spread the fire prevention message to your community. Contest closes Saturday, October 10th at 11:59 PM.
