Many will continue to refuse to connect green issues to black bodies and red blood spilled in the street Folks should care not only about how racism kills qui...ckly (via the police), but how racism also kills slowly and insidiously. Racial and environmental justice are inherently related and intertwined. In order to fully protect our environment, we must also protect those who go constantly and actively unprotected. Race is often neglected in talks of saving the planet, but we must understand that environmental justice is impossible to obtain without fighting for racial justice first. Social justice is NOT an optional component of environmentalism, but rather a starting point. In the United States, predominantly black neighborhoods experience twice the health risk from harmful air pollution than predominantly white ones do. This is only one example of the detrimental effects of environmental racism. Although this article dates back a few years, it’s message is extremely relevant right now.
