Everyone has probably heard about what’s going on with a certain BBQ shop here in Toronto. Believe us, we realize making this post gives them even more undeserved attention. The reason why we want to speak on this is because of this lovely woman right here. Cathy Ortega - mom, wife, chef, owner, the tita who wants to feed the world - she is the reason. She built her restaurants up from ground zero and worked so hard to get to where she was pre-pandemic. Now the pandemic. It h...as killed too many of our locally loved shops and many still struggling today - we’re no different. Especially at @tinunothirtyone. Because of the lockdown dine-in restrictions we have had to lay off employees. That keeps her up at night, so much so that she will pack meals and drop off food for them because she sees them as family. So in comes this gentleman who feels like he has the right to speak for all of us in the food industry. No sir. Even with the pandemic, we pivot. Even with the restrictions, we pivot. Even with the little to no help from the government, we pivot. But never will we put our employees, customers and familes at risk. This post is for Tita Cathy and for the other shop owners who are trying their best to overcome these hard times. The fact that he’s raised over $250,000 for his legal defence feels like a complete slap on the face. We brainstormed with local artist @felicitytsee for this year’s Father’s Day card! Honestly, we could not be any happier with the way it turned out. Felicity is incredibly talented and just such a lovely human to bounce off ideas with. Check out her work and follow this talented lady! Sadly, this year George Floyd’s kids won’t be able to celebrate Father’s Day with him. They won’t be able to thank him for being their #1 Dad or treat him to a good meal, why? Because of t...he colour of his skin. We’ve decided that a portion of the sales we make on our Father’s Day kits will be donated to grassroots organizations to honour Mr. Floyd. We’ve chosen 3: Equal Justice Initiative (@eji_org), Black Visions Collective (@blackvisionscollective) and Campaign Zero (@campaignzero).
