This Week’s Comment We don’t have much local produce right now, but we received beautiful purple garlic from Amandah’s farm in Lytton last week. Her farm is located high up on a hill. She’s been struggling with the problem of wild animals attacking her chickens, turkeys, goats and lambs for a long time. Amandah, like many other farmers, relies on her guard dogs. It’s very difficult to live in symbiosis with wild animals. They must sometimes feel tempted to resort to extreme... measures. I’d like to recommend that you try her fresh garlic before it starts sprouting. As for other local produce we still have to wait for a couple of months. Vegetables from California and Mexico have gone down in price. They include broccoli, green & colored peppers, snow peas, sugar snap peas, Brussels sprouts, zucchinis, asparagus, cauliflowers and more. This week’s promotional sale will feature stinging nettles from a forest of the Sunshine Coast. $5.00/bag with 30% extra in the bag. Take advantage of this sale, and enjoy cleansing yourself. SPICE UP your cooking!! Togarashi (Japanese hot peppers) from Uminami farm in Victoria
We received a shipment from Uminami Farm in Victoria! They are also trying to minimize their frost damage A lot of Daikon Radish with Leaves, Komatsuna, Nabana, Bitter Gourds, Soft Leaves Green Cabbage, Yellow & Green Hot Peppers!
Most of farms suffered from labor shortage this season, and the forecast of the sudden arrival of cold weather has thrown them into a panic. I’m glad I took one of my staff members with me so that we could offer help! We packed and boxed the produce that we were purchasing in Keremeos. Then we picked GOOSEBERRIES in the field, but... only five percent of the berries were ripe enough to be picked. I felt so badly that most of them will be spoiled by the frost coming in ...no time.... Please visit Tama to get the very valuable harvest!! Your great support is appreciated Hiroko Sugiyama
This week’s promotion will feature FRESH GARLIC (Red Russian) from Oliver It’s a good time to plant them now also!
This Week’s Comment Tuesday night I came back from this year’s final trip to the Okanagan. I drove almost 1000 km and visited four farms in two days. In town of Hope, I tried monkey bars and Trapeze rings at the park as usual. I was so happy I achieved the hardest part of the Trapeze rings, which was the goal I set for this season. According to the weather forecast the temperature will drop down to -13 in Keremeos ,-3 in Oliver and -6 in Naramata on Saturday. All ...the farmers were busy preparing for the first frost. Most of farms suffered from labor shortage this season, and this forecast of the sudden arrival of cold weather has thrown them into a panic. I’m glad I took one of my staff members with me so that we could offer help. We packed and boxed the produce that we were purchasing in Keremeos. Then we picked gooseberries in the field, but only five percent of the berries were ripe enough to be picked. I felt so badly that most of them will be spoiled by the frost coming in a few days.... On this trip we enjoyed sunny days and a stormy night. On the way home, the weather changed suddenly and dramatically several times on us, which almost scared us. We also received a shipment from Uminami Farm in Victoria yesterday. They are also trying to minimize their frost damage. As you can imagine, Tama is now totally filled with autumn harvest, and there is hardly any room to walk around in!! This week’s promotion will feature FRESH GARLIC (Red Russian) from Oliver. $14.50/1lbs bag(Reg.$19.50/ lb) It’s a good time to plant them now also! Pick of the Week 1.
