The Art Of Courage 19.01.2021

CELEBRATING 8 YEARS // A note from Heather 8 years ago, I had a chance encounter with a wonderful man, Kizungu Hubert, while travelling in DRC. I learned he was caring for 16 orphaned children on his own because there was no one else do it. He told me about the children, his community, and the obstacles they faced. Our conversation was brief, an hour at most, and we parted ways with only a promise to email in the future. But that meeting and that promise planted itself in my... heart. And it grew. What started as a partnership to help create better lives for the orphaned children, grew into a friendship and today Kizungu is like a brother to me. A year to the date we met, the doors opened at The Tchukudu Kids Home. So today, and each January 10th, we celebrate that friendship and all the wonderful collaborations, people and projects that have come from our two world’s colliding! In DRC, Kizungu and his family, all the Tchukudu Kids past and present, the staff, volunteers, and members of the community are getting together for a feast prepared by the women of the Tchukudu Women’s Centre (another world’s collide project!) This has been a heavy week. But there is still joy. There is still life. There is still love, and trust, and courage. We’ll be sharing photos and videos as we receive them today and over the next few days. Join us in celebrating life and love today. Cheers to everyone who has been along on this journey with us!

MEET LEYA // Leya arrived at The Tchukudu Kids Home with her sister Isabelle. Leya is 12 years old and her sister, Isabelle, is 8. Their father was a teacher in Lubero, but he was a native of Ntoto/Walikale. Both parents died of Ebola in 2019-20. Both sisters were brought to the Tchukudu Kids Home by Beya Mwisa one of the women from the TWTC. Thank you Mama Beya, I don’t know where I am now, but I know that here is the best place for me and for my sister Leya...I will... study and I will have food. - Isabelle I am very happy to know the TKH and this school where I will study freely...I can study freely, and maybe, I can stay here where I can eat food. - Leya Leya and Isabelle are two of the children who need sponsors for 2021. We currently have 58 children, like Leya and Isabelle, who need sponsors. If you would like to sponsor a child today, please head to the link in our bio! Our deepest thanks for considering a sponsorship! . . . . . #givingtuesday #DRC #mama #children #bigheart #helpingothers #ygk #yyz #ottawa #newyork #la #school #helpkids #theartofcourage #artforchange #artist See more
