This was us last year at @themotorcycleshows. Unfortunately we don’t get to do it this year and it makes us sad. Sad we don’t get to see all the friends we made in our courses, to meet potential new alum, and of course to have a great weekend with our amazing team and volunteers. I think we might have to do something to make up for missing out. Keep an eye out for an announcement. Hope you are all well and keeping healthy. Love from us.
Today seems like as good a day as any to celebrate the Chief - the guy who inspires, coaches, encourages and supports so many in this sport we’ve all come to love. I’ve never known anyone whose heart and soul are so committed to the love of riding, and guiding others to never stop learning, be safe always, and stay humble. Happy birthday, Trevor - enjoy your day, and thank you always for all you do.
Time for me to discuss the 5 C’s, everyone... When riders first complete the course and are practicing riding, and when they first get their class 6 license - r...iders are very CAUTIOUS. After getting that license, riders start getting CONFIDENT. That is awesome, and expected, as you practice and get more and more experience to fill that bag I talked about at the end of your road ride. A short time later riders start to be COCKY as they feel they now have full control of their bikes and start sharing their knowledge with others. This is where things start getting dangerous. Second- and third-year riders account for the most deaths in our sport. Some proceed to this cocky, know-it-all stage even sooner. There are two speeds on a motorcycle - Smart and Fast. Which are you trying to be? Then, just like some drivers are in their cars and trucks, riders become COMPLACENT. You don’t get on your motorcycle with the intention to get any better. You tried when you were learning (during the course with Too Cool) because there was a test in your near future. Too many riders don’t realize they are being tested every day. The rules don’t always stay the same. Racetracks are predictable venues to pursue getting safer in the shortest amount of time. Just like with our school - in our 18.5 hour program we reach 100kms of training and you should all agree that it was pretty intense and sometimes challenging, but also rewarding when we come back from the road ride. I’d also hope, as it is for me, that you found it humbling. Now, if you ride 100kms on the highway to Banff, how much do you really learn? In our class we talk about our ‘Five and Ride’. At the beginning, middle or end of your ride, spend five minutes practicing something - push steering, emergency braking, slow speed skills. How many actually do that? Hmmmm...I would love to think everyone does, but I know that’s not the reality of this recreational sport. Since it is a sport, a certain amount of practice is needed to stay ready to play the game. The game is you riding in the road, always hoping for a win, to get wherever you are going safely. Things like drinking and doing drugs would never be done before a game by a professional or amateur athlete. This is no different. For every curve, please slow down. I do it for every curve. I promise you that your motorcycle will continue to recharge your smile every minute you are on it. It takes true effort and willpower not to speed on today’s roads and no one loves going fast like I do. We have a lot of family and friends that worry about us and our choice to get involved in this sport. When we (me, Lanchi, our instructors) give advice or make comments or reminders about riding practices, it comes from a place of concern. We have the experience. We’ve seen mistakes be made and are hoping to avoid seeing the same things repeated. And now the final C - I am CONCERNED. I see things posted, I hear comments from riders and I do not want to add a mention of another student death in my SLLRR talk. Five in the Wall of Fame trailer is enough. I am aware of riding happening that is crossing into dangerous territory - the open road being treated like a racetrack. Rules and regulations not being followed, such as unlicensed riders travelling solo or to meet a chaperone. Riders without any or little additional or advanced training trying to coach others. Newly licensed riders feeling pressured into a style of riding, or chaperoning, before they’re really ready or capable to do so. These are the kinds of things that lead to riders getting injured or killed. All of us have a moral responsibility to speak up about these kinds of things when we become aware of them and will continue to do so. If you don’t like that, and aren’t willing to own up or change your habits, that’s unfortunate. We will not stand for it because we aim to be better collectively and can’t do it without everyone being on board. Stay humble, Trevor
Oh the memories.. We are sad that we won’t be able to hang out with some of the best people we know to say hello to old and new friends. But, we know that it is what it is. We’ll miss you all this year and have our fingers crossed for the next. Love you all!
Happiest wishes today to our moto-M.O.M., the beauty, brains and backbone of the school. It takes an impressive woman to be Chief’s Boss, and yet she does it with ease. Happy birthday to Lanchi, here’s to many more!
Sending best wishes to Chief’s right hand, his number 1, sometimes known as Inde... Happy birthday, Daynon!
