A little strength, a little balance and a whole lotta honkey tonk! When an off handed suggestion of "maybe we could do some line dancing" for vestibular rehab turns into monthly choreography updates! And in a blink of an eye, it's the end of a Sitka era. Big thank you to all of my wonderful colleagues, patients and admin team for an incredible 3.5 years. No I'm not moving again, but working towards streamlining my many hats - doing a combination of teaching/teachers assistant-ing at UBC, mentoring a couple of junior physios, and working clinically at Treloar Physio Kerrisdale.

Great news! Apparently more people are exercising during the pandemic, and they’re finding new ways to do it from home, with and without their own equipment Thanks Garmin for the super cool article comparing pre-and post- pandemic levels in #cycling , #golf, #running, and #walking and 2019 vs 2020. Concussion recovery can be all encompassing for some. If we can all learn a bit more to help them out it would vastly improve the quality of life of many. Laval and the Uni of Calgary are offering another FREE online mini course (MOOC) for those interested in learning more about concussions. "Concussion: prevention, detection and management" was developed by Dr Kathryn Schneider, Dr Carolyn Emery, Dr Pierre Fremont & Dr Keith Yeates, and is on offer to anyone - physios, pati...ents and public alike. I took last year's course and would highly recommend it! https://www.ulaval.ca//concussion-prevention-detection-and #MOOC #universityofcalgary #laval #concussion #postconcussionsyndrome #physio Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic Sitka Physio and Wellness

My physio tools for the day. 1. Theraband - classic physio exercises, obviously ;) 2. Earbuds - my Jabra bluetooth headphones allow me to do my sessions and still move around my "office" while avoiding the echo of speakerphone and without having to be stuck to my computer ... 3. Belt - self-mobilization to help with rotation in the spine 4. Hammer - strengthening elbow rotation (pronation/supination) 5. Timtam box (my going away gift from Physiologix Therapy Solutions) - to demonstrate the rotation movement of the vertebrae when we twist our spine and lift our arm 6. Deck of cards - a wicked self-mobilization technique to help with rotation of the upper back that I learned from my previous physio and UQ instructor Quentin at Milton Physiotherapy 7. Yoga blocks - for me to sit on while I work at my computer 8. Shoeboxes/Board games - computer props as I.can't.sit.on.a.chair.anymore It has definitely been fun working on exploring the different ways to educate, demonstrate self-mobilization techniques and find new ways to exercise/move with random things around the house. Online physio sure has gotten the creative juices flowing! What new tools have you discovered? Did you know you can get physio at home? 1. This works for new and existing injuries 2. This is covered by most insurance companies 3. Reach out if you have any questions... 4. Details below if you want to learn more After this new normal has taken us by storm this week we physiotherapists are trying to stay in touch with our patients, and to help any new patients out there to avoid set-backs and make new gains where we can. This also helps keep (some) new and fresh injuries out of the currently stressed hospital system! So what is tele-health or tele-rehab? It is using private and secure video conferencing to perform an assessment and treatment. Treatment will likely include a combination of education, exercise advice/cueing, and an explanation of self-release techniques. Tele-health is not new, but it has huge potential when we cant maintain appropriate social distance in our treatment rooms. Some health insurance companies already cover tele-health appointments, and the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia has been working tirelessly on figuring out the game plan with the others. At this point ICBC, Worksafe BC, Sun Life Canada and Manulife cover tele-health appointments. Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic has an excellent FAQ page for anyone interested in learning more. There is also a direct link to book appointments online starting next week (!) https://www.treloarphysio.com/online-physiotherapy-tele-re/ If you know of someone that is in need of any help, please SHARE my contact details and I am more than happy to answer questions, point them in the right direction or even book an appointment. Based on our regulations, I can only treat patients who are currently in BC. If you are out of province, I can try to link you up to other physiotherapists in other provinces, states, countries, etc. My own professional network has grown substantially over the last few years after being a nomad physio! And please keep working hard at the things you can control- wash your hands, keep your social distance, get some fresh air (if not in quarantine!), smile and try to learn something new. #telehealth #telerehab #telerehabilitation #onlinephysio #onlinephysiotherapy #ephysio #socialdistancephysio #socialdistancephysiotherapy #sociallyisolatedphysiotherapist #Vancouverphysio #BCphysio Sitka Physio and Wellness

Ever had pain from an old injury just pop up out of the blue with no trigger? Just over a week ago I was playing with a talented group of ladies at the Women's Masters Canadian Ultimate Championships in Edmonton. On Day 1, I woke up with grumbly low back pain reminiscent of an old injury. I hadn't done anything that may have injured it the day before, didn't sleep funny or do any strange movements to set it off, BUT what I did have was a big ball of nervous energy before sta...rting to play in my first Canadian championships. The pain persisted through breakfast and into warm up, and I debated taking something, Ibuprofen or Tylenol. I decided against it this time as I thought I might know what was going on. Sure enough, mid-way through the first game my pain was gone without the use of any medication, and continued to stay out of my way for the rest of the tournament. Curious to know what insider knowledge I used to make my decision? I'm lucky that through my physio training I've learned that pain is not always correlated to what's going on in the tissues. What was likely happening was that my anxiety triggered a boost in cortisol, a hormone that often spikes when we're under stress. Through a bit of a complex chemical cascade this hormone made my body more sensitive, and stimulated my system to revert back to a pattern, or neurotag, associated with my history of low back pain. A neurotag is a neural pattern that is created with a certain repeated experience. For example, the combination of streets you always choose when driving home from work/school/etc. I had not re-injured anything. My body had decided under stress to revert back into that past neurotag which made me experience pain similar to what I used to feel. I just needed a bit of adrenaline, and to settle into the first game, for my body to calm down to allow the pain to "magically" disappear. From then on I had no other issues for the rest of the tournament. Heck, I even went for a few layouts* (I still need to work on catching those) without any pain. A teammate even said I bounced up after one of them! So my challenge for you is that next time you feel pain or discomfort from a previous injury "out of the blue", think to yourself, have you actually re-injured it OR is your body responding to some form of increased stress. You might surprise yourself! *FYI a "layout" is a term used in ultimate to describe a diving catch, and usually leads lovely grass stains on the front of our shirts as seen in my picture. #neurotag #lowbackpain #backpain #pain #cortisol #adrenaline #layout #ultimatefrisbee #ultimatephysio #exerciseismedicine #getPTfirst #explainpain #TeamTreloar #SitkaFamily Noigroup

Vancouverites have you heard of the City Centre Urgent Primary Care Centre? It's kind of a mini hospital on Hornby and Davie St for non-life-threatening conditions for those that need to see a health-care provider within 12-24 hours, but dont require the level of expertise found in emergency departments. I've been surprised by the number of friends, family and patients who have yet to hear about this great facility, and want to spread the word to help decrease the number of... visits to the emergency departments that could be dealt with in an alternative setting! The UPCC has access to labs and x-ray on-site, and is intended to assess and treat conditions such as ... - Sprains and strains - Cuts, wounds or skin conditions - High fever - Infections, including chest, ear and urinary tract - Asthma attacks - New or worsening pain - Dehydration/constipation - Less serious child illness and injury It's open evenings and weekends, 7 days a week all year long. "The UPCC is not intended to replace family doctors or care providers as a person's first point of contact for health concerns, nor will it replace Emergency Departments for life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Rather, it is intended to be an additional service in the community, working in conjunction with all touch points for care to provide appropriate urgent services to patients, when and where they need it." #doyoureallyneedtogotoemergency #citycentreUPCC #publichealth

When was the last time you stretched? Do you remember how good you felt afterwards? I returned to a yoga class this morning. I was by far the least bendy person there, but you know what, thats okay cause I felt like a million bucks afterwards. Everyone has a different range of flexibility. Even contortionists and rhythmic gymnasts feel tight sometimes and feel the need to stretch. I was once treating a young gymnast who was concerned that her left leg just didnt reach as fa...r above her head as the right (oh I wish!). I had to explain to her that despite the fact that we seem symmetrical as people, we will always have one side that is bendier than the other. The neat thing about #flexibility is that you can optimize your given range with a little bit of attention and focus. Most people ask if they have to go to a #yoga class to stretch. Well, no. There are a variety of basic stretching classes, and yoga is just one option. With a little bit of guidance and some motivation, you can run through a full body stretching routine in the comfort of your own home. Wondering how stretching works? There are a variety of different physiological mechanisms. Primarily, it teaches the nervous system to be comfortable at a new range. If you gradually stretch further, your body realises it's safe to hang out that far from normal and then avoids sending inhibitory signals to prevent you from going that far. #Stretching is fantastic for maintenance and optimization. However, sometimes it just isnt enough for some injuries. Some niggly injuries just stick around for ages because they havent added enough #strength work into their routine to complement their #stretches, or else they may be stretching something that actually just needs a break from being pulled at. So, if you havent stretched in a while, maybe consider adding a little extra few mins into your typical routine! Questions? Feel free to shoot me a message! Ps thanks Semperviva Yoga for a great session!

I went for a glorious long ride yesterday, and my goodness was my neck sore by the end. But guess what, so were my quads, calves, and shoulders. We so often jump to the conclusion that if our necks or backs are sore, that something is injured or damaged. But if we felt the same soreness elsewhere, we wouldnt think twice about it. ... The neck and back have muscles that fatigue with continual exertion. Those muscles respond just the same as if you go to the gym and get sore biceps after doing a few sets of curls. Each muscle has a maximum amount of strength and endurance that it can tolerate before it gives up and lets something else take over. Given my bike posture in this video, which was getting close to the end of the ride, you might be able to see that I didnt have the muscular endurance to keep my head up. Lets compare this to you desk jockies who sit for too many hours and get a sore neck by the end of the day. Maybe your neck pain is an accumulation of lactic acid because your muscles just cant tolerate the endurance you demand of them? You would be shocked at what a bit of exercise can do to help improve your pain. Not stretches, or spikey balls. Strength and endurance. Aka working hard. If you need some guidance, your physio can help you with getting started with an exercise program for your neck, not just your upper body. Furthermore, if your neck pain is persistent beyond sore by the end of the day, begins tracking down your arms or legs, and is linked to any dizziness, difficulty speaking/swallowing or double vision its important to follow up with your physiotherapist or trusted medical professional for a more thorough assessment. #neckpain #neck #back #backpain #hurtnotharm #bikeneck #strength #endurance #muscle #bikos

However, what we have realized is that in many people symptoms take time to resolve and prolonged periods of rest may have a NEGATIVE impact because rest was interpreted as no activity in sport, school, work, screen and social activities....Some individuals benefit from starting low-impact, #aerobic activ...ity as early as 24 hours after injury." **It is important to follow up with a health care professional with experience in concussion rehab to figure out when is best to start exercise post-injury, in addition to the customary recommendations about the frequency, intensity and type of exercise. #exerciseismedicine #concussionrehab #returntosport

Did you know that ONLY 25% of Canadian men are considered healthy? For a country that considers ourselves active, weve got a long way to go. This week is Mens Health Week and Im part of a writing team that is helping to raise awareness about active healthy living through the creatively named Manopedia. The Canadian Men's Health Foundation put together this website along side Don't Change Much as a movement to inspire men and their families to lead healthier lives. This... platform is full of interesting facts that highlights that being healthy is more than just having a good diet and exercising regularly. Curious to learn more? Check out http://dontchangemuch.ca and let's get men talking about their #health! #MensHealthWeek #healthpromotion #exerciseismedicine #getPTfirst

On my way to work past all of the gorgeous wildflowers on the Arbutus Greenway for Bike to Work week! Pretty excited that Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic Kerrisdale is getting a secure bike rack since I've been cycling to work these last few months! Now I've got a safe place to put my bike in both at Treloar AND Sitka Physio and Wellness. I've been lovin cruising outdoors, plus I've been scoring heaps of Bikos :)... #Bike2Work #HUB20 #HUBCycling

Attention Physios! The Australian Physiotherapy Association has just released the 2018 Clinical guide to safe manual therapy practice in the cervical spine (formerly the 2006 VBI guidelines). I was lucky to be a part of the development team with Dr. Lucy Thomas at The University of Queensland - UQ and am hoping that you can all help disseminate this resource to help protect our patients. http://www.physiotherapy.asn.au/CervicalSpine... #VBI #vertebrobasilarinsuffiency #CAD #cervicalarterydissection #necktreatment #neckmanipulation #neckadjustments #getPTfirst #safepractice
