What I mean by net positive output is how much effort (energy) am I using as a practitioner to bring about Body/tissue awareness to the client. An example bei...ng, if I were doing Swedish massage and the client (receiver) wanted deep tissue work in their mid back what amount of effort would it take me as a practitioner to achieve that level of intensity. I understand that every body is unique in its level of perceived sensation and each application of force will be unique based on practitioner’s application and skill. However if we examine net positive output based on the following sensation intensity level scale that I have created. We can begin to understand how much each person is experiencing, receiving and giving during a session. Sensation scale. 1-10 1- No sensation- no intensity 2- Little sensation contact but no pressure- almost no intensity 3- Gentle sensation, gentle pressure (easily distracted) a very small amount of intensity 4- Gentle sensation moderate pressure (somewhat able to be distracted) a small amount of intesity 5- Moderate sensation, moderate pressure, small to moderate intensity 6- Moderate sensation slightly stronger pressure still have good body integration (able to fully breath) moderate intensity 7- Strong sensations that you can still fully breath in and explore moderate, very focused intensity 8- Strong sensation (verging on to much, Breath is not full, in the feeling of tolerating vs exploring) strong intensity 9- Into tolerating and waiting till its over (breath is exaggerated or held) Very strong intensity 10- Stop immediately (unsafe, injurious) Unable to gage strong intensity In the above chart we could exchange the concept of intensity for effort by the practitioner to achieve the desired sensation by the receiver in an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of Thai massage versus Swedish massage. In the Swedish deep tissue example mentioned above working around a table often limits my ability to achieve optimal directional pressure. I am often forced to move and continuously reposition myself at less effective angles. I usually have to use a stool or lower the table to get my body weight directly over the center of the area I’m trying to affect. Lowering the table whether its via energy used by an electric table or manually changing the height requires time and energy to do. So in this situation I would determine that my effort or intensity output to achieve deep pressure for the client at level 7 requires me to be using the same level 7 of effort to achieve. Where as in Thai massage in a supported supine fish pose for example using my feet in to support the receivers body while gravity and the weight of their own body adds intensity to the exchange I find myself in at a level 4-5 in effort and being able to provide level 7-8 in intensity for the receiver. A net gain of 2 or 3 in total output is achieved this way. Thai postures. I could go through all of them but it would be rather tedious for this post but for the sake of analysis lets look at one more example. Compare a the level of sensation achieved by a Thai hamstring stretch using a warrior lung. I use a level 2 or 3 maximum Thai application and the receiver can experience a level 7 up to 10 for a net gain between 4-8. The same Swedish application may be a 5 -6 output practitioner to a 5- 9 receiver receptivity for a net gain of 0-4. Theses conclusion in no way diminish the benefits of Swedish massage. As a registered practitioner of Swedish massage for over 18 years I have had much success in helping people achieve increased health and deepen body awareness tremendously. What I am aiming this article at is the net gain of Thai massage applications. My view is the more Thai massage that is practiced skillfully the more our society will benefit as a whole. Looking forward to working with you no matter which modality suits your needs. Guy Tardif RMT.
