AQ FISH FRIDAYS The Smallmouth Bass is a deep-bodied, warm-water fish native to Ontario. It is a member of the sunfish family and similar to the Rock Bass and the Largemouth bass. They have a small notch in between their two dorsal fins. One way to tell them apart from other bass is to note the placement of their mouth. If their mouth extends past their eyes, you are likely looking at a Largemouth Bass. This mural was painted in 2015 by Dave Sheridan, with the help of his talented wife, Diane and daughter, Dana. This is an up-close shot of an American Eel. This eel is not fully grown, as full-sized American Eels can grow as large as 6 feet. You can see our two largest 4' eels in the Aquatarium's dive tank!! Did you know that American Eels are now a threatened species? The issue is that a large number of man-made blockages infringed upon the eel's natural migration path for spawning. The subsequent construction of eel ladders can help these fish to avoid locks and power dams. They ar...e wired to work against water movements and traversing a variety of terrains. This unique wall was conceived in Dave Sheridan’s Thousand Islands Secondary School art class in 2011. The students were to explore the theme of biodiversity in the St Lawrence River and the project expanded to other secondary schools in the region from Gananoque to Cornwall. The Aquatarium remains open Thanksgiving weekend 2020! Due to the recent announcement by Premier Ford regarding the restriction on interactive exhibits at museums and discovery centres in the Toronto, Peel and Ottawa regions; the Aquatarium would like to announce that, since we are not located in those areas, we will remain OPEN this Thanksgiving Saturday & Sunday as currently scheduled. Unless of course there are any other unforeseen changes in our direct region. We will con...tinue to offer the same safe services that have won us the World Travel & Tourism Council's #safetravels award by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario. The Aquatarium continues to follow the Lanark, Leeds & Grenville’s Health Unit as well as the Municipal and Provincial guidelines. Guests will be admitted by times and no more than 30% of our capacity will be inside the AQ at any one time. In accordance with the Covid-19 protocols. Aquatarium appreciate guests’ patience with the facility as they adapt to the ways of operating in these uncertain times. We ask that guests will recognize and adhere to the Lanark Leeds & Grenville Health unit’s guidelines and remain 6’ away from other guests that are not a part of their immediate party and wear a mask at all times while inside the facility. The Aquatarium remains cognizant of everyone’s safety and are doing our very best to ensure Covid-19 safe protocols are being followed by offering timed visits, size limits, floor markings, hand sanitizing stations at all exhibits, extra sanitation staff on top of our regular cleaners and AQ Ambassadors monitoring each floor.
