Meet The First Ever BBPA Scholarship Award Recipient! For the past 34 years, the BBPA has supported over 1,200 students in their academic pursuit and we are always incredibly proud to see most of them go on to excel in their chosen careers. One of them is Dr Wayne Batchelor who received $1000 back in 1986! He was the only recipient then as we couldn’t afford to give more. In Dr Wayne’s words ‘I remember the day I got that award as if it was yesterday because it was the first ...time that I was recognized by my community, he said. One cannot entirely appreciate how that impacts you until you go through that process. It’s one thing to be honoured by your society or maybe your training program, but when your community recognizes your efforts and achievements, it almost has more meaning and it has an even deeper impact. That’s one of the awards I am most proud of because it came fairly earlier on in my career’ Dr Wayne went on to become Canada’s first Black Interventional Cardiologist! He is now married with a beautiful family, and thriving in his community. Stories like these encourage us to do what we do and that’s why we can’t wait to publicly announce this years BBPA scholarship winners. Thanks to our amazing sponsors, we can do more than we could do 34years ago. Are you inspired yet? We definitely are. #tuesdaymood #tuesdaymotivation #blackexcellence #BlackinStem #scholarships #scholarshipopportunities #canada

Canada Launches the first ever Black Entrepreneurship Program It’s no news that Black business owners and entrepreneurs make invaluable contributions to all communities across the county and our success is essential to Canada’s economic recovery and prosperity. It’s also public knowledge the impact COVID had made to Black business as well as the barriers Black entrepreneurs and businesses face due to systemic racism. While the government of Canada has made strides to alleviat...e these challenges, there’s still a lot of ground to cover. Earlier today, the Prime Minister announced investments of up to nearly $221 million in partnership with Canadian financial institutions including up to nearly $93 million from the Government of Canada over the next four years to launch Canada’s first-ever Black Entrepreneurship Program. This program will help thousands of Black business owners and entrepreneurs across the country recover from this crisis, combat barriers to economic success and scale up their businesses. The Black Entrepreneurship Program will include 1. up to $53 million to develop and implement a new National Ecosystem Fund to support Black-led business organizations across the country. 2. up to $33.3 million in support through the new Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund that will provide loans of between $25,000 and $250,000 for Black business owners and entrepreneurs. 3. up to $6.5 million to create and sustain a new Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub that will collect data on the state of Black entrepreneurship in Canada and help identify Black entrepreneurs’ barriers to success as well as opportunities for growth. This is exciting news and it is a targeted step in the direction of enabling the Black community and combating systemic racism. #BLM #blackempowerment #blackentrepreneurshipprogram #2020 #canada
