Today is Inauguration Day which means Kamala Harris will make history as she raises her right hand to become the first womxn to take the vice presidential oath. She will also be the first African American and first Asian American vice president. Here are 5 other noteworthy facts about Kamala: 1 Her name is from the Indian word meaning "lotus" and is another name for the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, amplifying the empowerment of womxn. 2 She has a long history of activism.... When she 13 she held her first protest with her sister to object to the apartment building they lived in that didn't allow children to play outdoors in the front lawn. 3 She has a degree in political science and economics from Howard University. She will be the first vice president to have graduated from a historically Black university. 4 She was California's first Black womxn DA. One of her many standout accomplishments was creating Open Justice during her time as an attorney general. This help increase police accountability by recording the number of deaths and injuries of those in police custody. 5 She has two step children, they call her "Momala." See more

Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th, 1929. He was a pivotal advocate for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. While it's easy to celebrate how far we've come as a society, it's important to hold ourselves and those around us accountable on the work still to be done in regards to equality. I want to encourage you to have those tough conversations and not leave all of the work on Black folx because it's not their job to teach yo...u about your privilege. Seeing people you love and look up staying silent during the height of the BLM movement is painful. Seeing them staying silent after what happened at the Capitol is painful. I am no longer willing to sit back and not use my voice when people's lives are literally on the line. For everyone who posted a black square after the death of George Floyd, are you still holding yourself accountable and using your voice to advocate and amplify Black people or are you still just "listening and learning?"
