FILE YOUR TAXES EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T WORK !!!!! Eligibility for certain benefit payments is based on information from your yearly tax return. If you don’t file your income tax and benefit return, you could miss out on these credits and benefits. the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit and integrated provincial and territorial programs;... the Canada child tax benefit (CCTB) and integrated provincial and territorial programs. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, they must also file a return for you to receive your benefit payment; the universal child care benefit (UCCB).

Keeping your tax records is important to support the information you have provided to the Canada Revenue Agency. The CRA recommends keeping your tax records for at least six years. Tax records include your returns and the supporting documentation used to prepare them such as expense receipts, T4s that record employment income and at-source deductions and receipts for charitable donations.
