Anthony Joseph Vidal (pronounced V-EYE-dahl) was a 22 year old immigrant from Spain who arrived in New Zealand in 1888. He moved to Hawkes Bay and started Vidal Estate in 1905, making it one of the oldest wineries in New Zealand. The town of Hastings has now grown around the winery and it has since moved operations to a larger site. This weekend Vidal Estate would have been at the International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration for the second time. #i4c20 We had the oppor...tunity to sit and taste with winemaker Hugh Crichton @hughcrichton and listen to his wine making philosophy while on vacation in 2018. His Legacy Chardonnay is hand picked, whole cluster pressed and 100% naturally fermented in François Frères and Mercury barriques with minimal intervention. Did you know that The Temple of Bacchus is one of the best preserved and grandest Roman temple ruins? Its believed to have been built in the second century and is located in the Békaa Valley. MJ was making asparagus risotto for dinner so off I ventured in search of a Sauvignon Blanc. This wine looked interesting enough. (The bottles we sometimes find in our cellar.) A Chateau St. Thomas Les Gourmets Blancs 2012; is a blend of SB, Chardonnay and Viognier from the Békaa ...Valley in Lebanon. The wine won a Gold Medal at Les Citadelles du Vin wine competition in France in 2013. A rich, full bodied, well integrated blend as not one varietal stood out over the other. It was a bit hotter than we like for a white at 14% but paired well with our food. This Benjamin Bridge Tidal Bay was a perfect sipper in this humidity and paired perfectly with our white fish and spicy chickpea quinoa. Officially launched in June 2012 by the Winery Association of Nova Scotia, Tidal Bay is the first wine appellation for Nova Scotia.... Although all Tidal Bay wines must follow the same set of standards, each wine is slightly different, and wineries are able to uniquely express their individuality within their Tidal Bay wines.
