Matt’s middle name was chosen by my anesthesiologist. Kind of. Among meeting Tims family for the first time while we were newly dating, I was introduced to Sam and Diane. Long time best friends of his parents, I was eager to impress them lol. I quickly learned that they did not require a prim and proper filtered and conscientious version of me. They took me under their wing as is. And I got to witness their unconditional love and friendship up close - and if you did ...too - you know how lucky that made me, to be welcomed into their circle. I always looked for them at Pembroke events to settle in and catch up. They always greeted me with hugs and kisses and connection. In the spring/summer of 2015 Sam got very sick. We had an opportunity to visit with them at their beautiful house, that he built. While we were there, I noticed these bird feeders they had outside their windows. It felt like hundreds, but it was probably more like 10, hummingbirds: metallic green helmets, iridescent ruby chests that flashed in the sun, zipping, or maybe floating, in and out ... for our entire visit! I had never seen anything like it. That visit stuck with me. It would be the last time we got to see Sam. Every time I see hummingbirds it makes me think of this kind special man, and his wife Diane, who loved unconditionally. Who accepted me instantaneously. Who offered comfort and joy every time we got to catch up. I hope Tim and I can be those people to our kids partners in the future. I’ll never forget their kindness. Fast forward by a year: my anesthesiologist walked in to administer an epidural before our baby was born. Her scrub hat had hummingbirds on it. I was overwhelmed with this feeling of Tims mom Eileen, and Sams presence. A few hours later our baby boy was born: Matthew Samuel Robert Sicoli. We still don’t have a name for Matts little sister. Shae was getting a bit too dark at the root and a bit too light on the ends. I did baby fine highlights around her face, and balayaged (is that a word?) her lowlight through the ends. magnifico.
