The Guesthouse Shelter 26.02.2021

Gooood morning This chilly Thursday morning we are #thankful for being able to expand our services & assist even more individuals in the North Simcoe area during this pandemic This second lockdown has really tested us all. It's not been easy for any of us, whether you are a RN at the local hospital, a parent navigating new learning techniques, a single person stuck inside with no supports to reach out to, or able to work from home and learn a whole new routine, it's safe t...o say we've all experienced a roller coaster of emotions this year. Unfortunately, the reality of being disconnected to multiple services, dealing with constant road blocks and possibly leaning on unhealthy coping mechanisms is the every day reality of our Guests, not just during the pandemic. We greatly miss being able to see all of your wonderful & unique selves, and we miss the sense of community we once had within our shelter walls. YOU were the ones who made it a community, and TOGETHER we will rebuild that community once we can do so safely. In the mean time, you can lend your support by sharing this post, talking about what homelessness means in your community and how you can help end the stigma greatly attached to anyone experiencing homelessness. DONATE, LIKE & SHARE to show your community support!! #CNOY #Feb2021 #coldestnightoftheyear #getinvovled #inthistogether #homelessness #itstartswithus #midland

Today marks 30 days until we participate in a Canadian wide effort to help end homelessness. Last week we had the pleasure of having a past colleague come by and take some candid shots of us. It was really nice to get outside & throw some snowballs around in honour of a wonderful cause. We are looking for YOUR support! Join us in the fight to end not only homelessness but the stigma unfairly attached to it.... By signing up to participate and walk, together in spirit, we can help crush the stigma that follows so many. But it first starts with you. A warm heart, for all those cold hands out there Visit www.cnoy.org/midland Song used in video: its alright by mother mother #cnoy #2021 #itstartswithus #communitysupport #inthistogether #midland #tiny #tay #jointoday

Are you TEAM CAPTAIN material?! Do you love getting involved in your community? How about lending a helping hand to those in your community who need it most? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you should sign up www.cnoy.org/midland to participate in walking for a cause! We can't wait to see you (virtually of course!) ... #communitysupport #inthistogether #TGHS #theguesthouse #midland #penetang #tay #tiny #homelessness #CNOY21

This year we have made the decision, in the best interest of each and every one of you lovely souls, to make Coldest Night of the Year 2021 a completely VIRTUAL event. What does this mean?!? Well, it means that we are unfortunately going to miss out on seeing each one of your bright smiles & cheerful spirits, BUT it also means we are keeping each other as safe as we can. And that folks, is LOVE! ... CNOY this year will solely focus on raising two things: 1. Social awareness surrounding homelessnesss 2. Raising funds to help support the people in our community who are experiencing homelessness this year Record your "Coldest Night" walk and tag us :) We'd love to see your favourite walking trails! We would LOVE it if you (yes, YOU!!) considered "walking" with us this year! Spread the word, invite your friends and challenge your colleagues to get involved too!

Ever wondered what 800lbs of potatoes looks like? Look no further! The Township of Tiny On-Call Firefighters made a donation of over 800lbs of potatoes to T...he Guesthouse Shelter in Midland. The food will be provided to families in need and prepared for the shelters meals. The Guesthouse Shelter in Midland provides food and shelter within a safe environment for those in need. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic the shelter has had to pivot, like many local businesses. Story time <3 The kindness of our community is ASTOUNDING. At Christmas time last year, our organization was touched to receive over 70 bags and purses filled to the brim with necessary items and goods for our guests. This special donation was organized by a very caring young girl in our community. Our guests loved the bags, and our staff team was so humbled and touched by Camerons generous actions. ... Today, we are thanking Cameron and her family once again! In one hour, they managed to collectively fundraise 950 dollars for our organization! Thats impressive! They are the epitome of kindness and community action, and their generosity ensures that we continue to prepare and deliver nutritious meals to our guests in this time of need. THANK YOU to Jenn and her daughters Cameron and Maddy for sharing your hearts with The Guesthouse Shelter and our guests. We are so fortunate to be a member of this community, and we appreciate this support immensely. Today, and every day, we honor those who lost their lives, their culture & community, and forever changed the trajectory of their lives, as well as that of their families to residential schooling. We stand with you. We see you. We honor you. ... And we pledge, as leaders, colleagues, friends & family to continue to carry the torch and to pass it on to our young so that they too know about the tragedies that occurred, a short time ago, here in Canada and that although residential schools are not in operation any longer, the stigma and racism is still very much present. #orangeshirtday #communitycares #communitysupport #theguesthouseshelter #IndigenousLivesMatter #everychild

Hello Community, As our service operations have transitioned, we have found ourselves in need of disposable masks. We use disposable masks as a protective measure when visiting clients off-site, distributing meals, and completing community outreach. It is essential for our staff team to use whatever precautionary tools are available to keep everyone safe and healthy. Our guests are vulnerable individuals, many with pre-existing health concerns, if they fall ill, they will ne...ed them too. At this time, we would be so happy to accept any donations of disposable masks. Please call the shelter at 705-527-4111 if you have any to spare. Thank you so much for thinking of us. We hope you're staying healthy. <3

The Guesthouse Shelter 02.06.2020

To our volunteers and stakeholders: We wanted to take a second out of the day to make sure we are keeping you informed with what has been happening at the Centr...e as well as what our immediate future looks like. These are unprecedented times that call for unprecedented measures. We have been focused on keeping everyone safe by providing our staff and participants the opportunity for proper social distancing as well as establishing proper hygiene protocols. However, looking forward to what might face us, we have decided that a proactive approach is the best way to try and minimize the impacts of the COVID19 pandemic on our participants as well as on our community. As a result, March 19th we decided that the best course of action is moving our operations temporarily into a local motel for our most vulnerable as well as providing tent, tarps and sleeping gear for those who are living rough then we are brining food to their locations through outreach. This ensures that people experiencing homelessness can properly self-isolate, as recommended by health officials. At the motel we have staff providing 24/7 support and we will be increasing our outreach efforts in the coming days. We have been working closely with the County of Simcoe and our other shelter partners on this solution, and have the support of the County of Simcoe in navigating these difficult times as they have committed financial support to make sure we can still be operational as well as provide appropriate safety measures required to help flatten he curve of this pandemic. We thank the County leadership and staff for recognizing the the urgency in this situation and assisting us to take the necessary action to ensure our homeless population continues to be served, supported and protected through these extremely challenging times. We apologize to our volunteer and other stakeholders for not having this information out to you before the move. We assessed that we had a lack of social distancing space in our 88 Mulcaster Hub that created a imminent risk and as the situation in the province escalating we decided yesterday afternoon that we needed to act fast. To our amazing volunteers, please check your emails as we will have updates soon of what this looks like for volunteering moving forward. We will continue to use our 88 Mulcaster location to prep meals to go to the motel so we will still need your help. If you are on a volunteer meal shift please still come to help if you are able and if you are on a overnight shift and would still like to help please email us at [email protected] and we will send you the address. Outreach is still meeting at the Centre and running as usual. Please stay tuned and thank you for your patience. We will have staff onsite at 88 Mulcaster to provide information and direction as well as accept donations. Please accept our apologies in advance if you are not getting through on the phone line as we have been receiving a higher number of calls then usual. I personally want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and assure all that together we will get through this. We have the absolute best staff and volunteers in the world and I am honoured to work with them. We are a strong community, and we have seen that time and time again. We do this because everyone has value and noone should be left behind during this unpredictable time!!!! Be safe everyone!!!!! Sara Peddle Executive Director

The Guesthouse Shelter 19.05.2020

Dear Community, The Guesthouse Shelter would like to thank you so much for your continued support as we navigate an ever-changing social dynamic. We have been heeding all government-encouraged directives regarding social distancing, and have adjusted our daily services as required in an effort to keep healthy our registered guests and the vulnerable community members who access our programming. Initially, we temporarily placed on hold the duties of our committed volunteers, r...estricted in-kind donations, and limited public access to the building by suspending our daily community meal services instead offering one daily meal-to-go for those in need between the noontime hours. However, the situation continues to evolve and we have implemented further service modifications to impede the impacts of COVID-19. The Guesthouse Shelter has been working collaboratively with The County of Simcoe, Social and Community Services Division and other social service agencies in the area on determining the safest course of action for our guests, staff, volunteers and community members moving forward. Effective today, Monday March 23rd 2020, all registered guests staying at The Guesthouse Shelter have been placed in temporary motel accommodations offsite from 522 Elizabeth Street. Moving our guests to a safe and secure location offsite allows guests the ability to self-isolate if needed. Additionally, guests can freely practice social-distancing requirements, something not always easily attainable within a confined shelter environment. This is a decision being replicated throughout our communities, at the direction of The County of Simcoe. Our staff team, in partnership with other providers, will deliver meals and comprehensive outreach to our registered guests and vulnerable community members. Community members can access a lunch-to-go every day between 12:30PM and 1:30PM outside our doors at 522 Elizabeth Street. The building itself is temporarily closed to the public. We will require some extra helping hands preparing and packaging food in the coming days. If you are a TGHS Volunteer, please look out for future communications from our team on opportunities and ways to help. If you would like to help us prepare food for a few hours at the shelter, please email Emily at [email protected]. Thank you to EVERYONE during this trying stretch. One step at a time, we will get through this together. Thank you. The Guesthouse Shelter team

We all seem subjected to rapid changes among COVID-19. It hasnt been easy for our team to navigate these new and ever-evolving challenges. During times of adversity, one thing that has remained true to us is the generous and genuine care of our donors. We want to say THANK YOU to each and every single one of you. We thank you for the surge of online donations, gift cards, food items and take-out containers although our services are changing rapidly, we will continue to off...er service.
