First show of 2020 in beautiful Fanny Bay, BC! Intrepid souls braving the rain and snow to come out and sing--couldn't ask for anything more!
Next Saturday night--for all you Up Islanders!
Join me in Brentwood Bay on Jan 11th! Sooooo looking forward to seeing John Gogo's show at the Brentwood Bay Village Empourium!
Met this gentleman and friend of the Seegers at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference in Stamford, CT. Shared lots of great stories with me, and even did a short interview for his radio show! Can't upload the mp3, so I'll look for a link somewhere.
This, in no small measure, brings it home and affirms why I do what I do: Mark, Tonight, in tiny old Bar Mills on the Saco River, you opened a deep well of mem...ory and love. Pete Seeger’s long public struggle for justice and peace came to life. I knew none of the other people present, yet when you brought fourth the songs in us, we all relaxed into the comfort of old comrades. You must be feeling the power of the great legacy that is now yours to use. I would like to help if I can. I especially thank you for developing and performing a great program that includes Toshi. Authors, including Pete himself, have said little about her critical role in their exquisite partnership. She purposely kept out of the spotlight, mostly. Yet when she signed her notes Justa H. Seeger, it was clear that she appreciated a bit of respect now and again. Interviewer: and what do you do Mrs. Seeger? Oh, I’m just a housewife. She actually managed Peter with unending love, and a very clear professional eye. As I mentioned tonight, I was captain of Clearwater 1972-73, and executive director of the Hudson River Sloop Restoration, Inc. ( now Hudson River Sloop Clearwater) 1973-75. I have been a member ever since. I was straight out of school and Toshi became my great mentor, mostly in aspects of diplomatic advocacy and the power of humility. She also taught me to make beef stew, tie-dye clothes, and to accept a complement with a simple, Thank you. More soon, J.R. Phillips Bath, Maine
A wonderful last show for this first US tour, at Saco River Theatre in Bar Mills, Maine. Amazing hosts, wonderful team. A packed house! Attentive, warm, sang with gusto, and stood up en masse at the end. Lovely comments after, and a great dinner with my hosts to finish the day. Tomorrow back to Portland, flying to Vancouver on Tuesday. See y'all soon!
Happiest dad on earth to have my sweet, amazing grrrll, Emeiia as part of our backstage crew at United Solo. A fun show with a full house that sang from the get...! go. I actually had to ask them to listen to a couple of songs ;) , and that was ok. too. Lots of wonderful feedback and sharing in the lobby after this photo was taken. More to follow....xomox See more
You have to love a tech rehearsal that takes 45 minutes, instead of the allotted two hours. Pics do not include acoutrements that will be on hand for Sunday. #incompleatfolksinger #UnitedSolo #TheatreRow #PeteSeeger
Pete Seeger may have described himself as an "Incompleat Folksinger", but Mark Hellman's interview with All About Solo is anything but 'incompleat'. Pete Seege...r's The Incompleat Folksinger . . . . . . #markhellman #theatre #solo #PeteSeeger #folksinger See more
Another good day in the US of A, eh?
This came out today! https://allaboutsolo.com/a-canadian-tribute-to-an-american/
Two very special events today: 1) I got to visit the home of the Clearwater Organization on the banks of the Hudson River, and have a brief chat with Anita, on...e of the staff. I'll be going up to Kingston on the Hudson for a special Clearwater event this coming Saturday, meet some more people, and actually see the good sloop itself. 2) Worked my way into an open stage night at the Towne Crier Restaurant in Beacon. Didn't sing Pete songs (a bit like bringing coals to Newcastle), but went all Canadian with Leonard Cohen and Tragically Hip. Met a couple of fellow players who will try to see th show in NYC, and invited me to another event in Beacon on Friday night. Small steps along the road, but steps nonetheless! See more
