An Ode to The Good Doctor Sometimes being a HappiHuman means we must go through some grief - as I am going though right now. So if you’ll oblige me, I’d like to share my candid thoughts from a journal entry I wrote about my beloved Berkeley boy - my first dog who was much, much more than that.... https://www.happihuman.com/blog/an-ode-to-the-good-doctor My intention in sharing these private moments is not to make you sad or cry or conjure up hurtful memories of your own. Rather, my intention is to open my heart in the hopes that others will open theirs. We must remember that love is the foundation upon which all of humanity stands. And with all the craziness and challenges humanity has faced this past year, I think we could all use this reminder - especially around the holidays. So as we go forth, remember the cherished people and pets in your life. Rekindle lost connections. Keep your heart open. And return to being human.

One in six children are now experiencing a probable mental disorder, according to a study co-authored by the University of Cambridge ’s Prof Tamsin Ford. This has risen from one in nine in the last three years, according to The Mental Health of Children and Young People in England 2020 report, published by NHS Digital. Anew study by researchers at the University of Cambridge finds that the government-imposed lockdowns in response to the coronavirus pandemic cause significant ...harm to children’s mental health. The study, published this week in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, was the first of its kind to analyze data on younger children’s mental health before and during the first lockdown in the United Kingdom last spring. Following 168 children between the ages of 7 and 11 , the researchers conclude: During the UK lockdown, children’s depression symptoms have increased substantially, relative to before lockdown. The scale of this effect has direct relevance for the continuation of different elements of lockdown policy, such as complete or partial school closures. They continue: Specifically, we observed a statistically significant increase in ratings of depression, with a medium-to-large effect size. Our findings emphasise the need to incorporate the potential impact of lock-down on child mental health in planning the ongoing response to the global pandemic and the recovery from it. Other studies linking declining mental health with lockdown policies have emerged for adolescents and young adults in recent months, but children were not typically represented. For example, the CDC reported in August that 1 in 4 individuals ages 18-24 contemplated suicide during the spring lockdowns, and a recent Harvard study found startling rates of depression in young adults. Adolescent mental health has been hit particularly hard by the lockdowns and related social distancing policies. For example, a 16-year-old boy from Brunswick, Maine took his life last week after leaving a note saying that he felt locked in his house during the pandemic and separated from friends due to remote learning. Neural therapy is based on the treatment of a person’s Nervous System since this is what administers and interconnects all systems. Specifically, it is the Auto...nomous Nervous System, which is located throughout our skin and internal organs, that connects the internal environment with the external, like an extensive information network. The goal with neural therapy is to improve the health of the autonomic nervous system by optimizing the inputs between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. This is accomplished through use of a local anesthetic. By blocking pain signals with an anesthetic, a painful nerve responds by decreasing its firing events after the anesthetic wears off, subsequently treating nerve-based pain. This has been thoroughly adopted in conventional pain management with nerve blocks to treat various painful conditions. Neural therapy incorporates standard nerve blocks into a broader treatment protocol that aids the overall health of nerves, muscles and organs. If our Nervous System is irritated or blocked maybe because of surgical intervention or some other disease, Neural therapy will seek to unblock this area and free up the circulation of information and energy necessary to maintain and/or restore our natural equilibrium. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, HBO or HBOT, is a medical treatment that uses oxygen to speed and enhance the body’s natural ability to heal. HBOT is approved by the... American Medical Association, FDA, and Medicare. Hyperbaric chambers are medical devices and require a licence from Health Canada. Before granting a licence, Health Canada experts review technical information to ensure that the medical device is safe and effective when used for specific conditions. Persons who may benefit from HBOT suffer from various diseases or injuries associated with lack of oxygen on a cellular level. It is at this cellular level where all life takes place. During treatment, a patient goes into a closed chamber. The atmospheric pressure inside the chamber is increased. When the pressure reaches the level prescribed for the treatment, the patient is given 100 percent oxygen to breathe for a set amount of time. Healing is part and parcel of a new way of life: an upgraded one. By taking responsibility and stoping both the personal blame and excuses you will be in the drivers seat. Yes it is about getting to the root cause of dis-ease, discomfort and illness. However, healing must also incorporate a review of your lifestyle by looking at your past, your diet, sleep and so on. I realize it’s not easy, but know I have been there. Once you feel empowered you’ll realize that it’s the only... way to heal. It is commonly accepted, and scientifically proven, that a healthy diet can have a positive effect on overall health and personal performance on the job at school on the field or in the boardroom. Similarly, what you eat can play a role in how you experience fibromyalgia/CFSpossibly triggering flare-ups and/or providing relief. Diet, therefore, is often discussed along with other non-pharmacologic (non-medication) treatments for fibromyalgia. Diet changes help your body to w...ork better and heal itself, and that often takes time. Try to be patient and dedicate yourself to this process. Even if your diet doesn't seem to make a difference in your symptoms, remember that many aspects of the chronic fatigue syndrome diet are beneficial for your overall health. Fatigue is an extreme lack of energy. Chronic fatigue (CF) is a complex, long-term illness that impacts on a wide range of systems throughout the body. It cause...s a wide array of symptoms that might present differently for each person with the condition. Doctors officially recognize extreme fatigue as a significantly reduced ability to perform activities that were once routine before the onset of CF. The fatigue in CF often lasts 6 months or longer. In the context of CF, it is important to note that a doctor does not use fatigue to refer to a person feeling tired or unmotivated at a certain point in the day. The fatigue in CF may be so severe that it interferes with daily function. Experts suggest a well-balanced, nutritious diet for everyone, but a person with CF could especially benefit. Now on my blog - Brain Inflammation: What it is and what you can do about it. Increasingly many more functional medicine patients are becoming knowledgable with leaky gut. If you have leaky gut, chances are you also have a leaky brain tooas similar processes cause it. The blood-brain barrier is a protective layer in the circulatory system of your brain. This protective DMZ serves to insulate and block harmful substances while allowing essential nutrients to pass into the b...rain and cellular debris to pass out. However, certain circumstances can break down the blood-brain barrier and cause it to become hyper-permeable, or leaky. When unwanted substances enter the brain, they cause brain inflammation linked to conditions such as: - Depression - Anxiety - Brain fog - Headaches & migraines - Cognitive impairment - Alzheimer’s - Parkinson’s disease - ADHD - Schizophrenia & other psychological disorders While the number of leaky brain causes & symptoms may seem exhausting, the takeaway is that the brain is receptive to simple healing protocols. There are a number of things you can do to help heal neuroinflammation. Don’t procrastinate about feeling bettertake action and invest in your brain. Researchers are finding evidence that there may be steps we can take to reduce our risk of Alzheimer’sor at least delay its onset. Science now points to the ability to reduce dementia risk and enhance cognitive function and health as we age. There are steps that individuals can take to prevent or reverse mild cognitive impairment and improve their cognitive function, performance, and brain health throughout their life. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle are amongst those actio...ns as is a life-affirming diet. Our understanding of dietary influences on Alzheimers remains in its infancy. However, a growing number of epidemiological studies indicate that there is a strong relationship between nutrition (or a lack of it) and Alzheimers. While saturated fats and high serum cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimers, consumption of long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (particularly DHA) and antioxidants such as vitamin E appear to lower risk. Individuals should limit their intake of foods that are high in saturated and trans-unsaturated fats, such as factory meats, fast food, and other industrialized food stuffs along with excess alcohol. Clinical nutrition is the therapeutic management of individuals using an evidence-based understanding of nutritional principles and the functional implementatio...n of food and nutrients. Digestion, absorption, transport, and disposal of waste is essential to comprehensively acknowledge the physiological and biochemical processes involved in health and dis-ease. It is also the practitioner’s role to understand the client’s attitude to health and success and to be able to understand the physical, emotional, spiritual, familial, social, and occupational stressors that impact their health. In doing so, a holistic approach to health and disease is applied. Our health is not predetermined by our genes. However, our day to day decisions (or let’s be honest: habits) on our health is determined by our diet and lifestyle choices. Taking responsibility for your health takes you from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat of your life. That’s empowering, but it’s also a great responsibility. Taking responsibility for your health is understanding that you are fully in charge of your own destiny through your own decisions. Taking respo...nsibility for your health means that you acknowledge that no one has the power to determine your health not your friends, not your parents, not your partner, not even your doctorAll the power belongs to you. Once you accept this, you stop relying on others to help you live the kind of life you want or blaming them for things that don’t work out as you hoped. Taking responsibility of your health also means living a lifestyle with purpose and intention. It means having a clear idea what you want out of life, having a plan on how to achieve it, and consciously making decisions that take you closer to achieving your health goals. Most people think of inflammation in relation to arthritic joints, or maybe a sprained ankle or wrist. But did you know your brain can become inflamed, too (known as neuroinflammation)? Inflammation is usually the body's response to injury and stress such as the redness and swelling that accompanies an injury or infection. The problem with inflammation in the brain is that it doesn’t necessarily cause immediate hurt. Instead symptoms such as brain fog, slow thinking, fatigue,... and depression are the hallmarks. The inflammation slows down communication between neurons. This is what causes you to feel foggy, dull, and slow. Other common causes of brain inflammation include chronic inflammation in the body, leaky gut, high blood sugar and diabetes, hormone imbalances, hypothyroidism, food intolerances (gluten is a notorious brain inflamer), stress, and brain autoimmunity a disorder in which the immune system erroneously attacks and damages brain tissue. It is more common than people realize. Don’t procrastinate about feeling bettertake action.
