Following PDAC’s continued efforts, the federal government published draft legislative proposals in December, to extend timelines for spending capital raised via flow-through shares. While the legislation remains in process, the CRA has confirmed the assumption that issuers/auditors are likely to treat the proposed amendment in the year-end report with the one-year extension enacted.

The PDAC Convention has witnessed much change in its 89 years. What started as a small gathering at the The Omni King Edward Hotel in Toronto, back in the 1930s, grew and moved to the Fairmont Royal York in 1944. Its growth did not stop there. Attendance continued to increase and it was moved to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in 1997, where it is still hosted today. Now considered the world’s premier mineral exploration and mining convention, PDAC is once again moving with the times. In 2021, we will host a fully virtual convention for the very first time. That means we can reach every corner of the world. Learn more at pdac.ca/convention.

Nicole Sampson is a PDAC veteran, having been a part of the convention team for 17 years. With a diverse background in marketing, business administration, and education, Nicole first joined the team as a Convention Coordinator where she worked on everything from presentations to exhibits. Now as Convention Director, Nicole leads an all-female convention team, bringing to life world’s premier mineral exploration and mining event every year. Having grown from 5,000 to 30,000 a...ttendees during her time, she has witnessed the gradual rise in female speakers, attendees and students as the industry works hard to balance the gender scale. With the PDAC Convention going virtual in 2021, Nicole is excited to introduce new features that were previously unavailable in a live event scenario. From matchmaking to personalized recommendations, the virtual platform will offer an online marketplace for members, exhibitors, and stakeholders to invest, network, and learn. Most importantly, Nicole and her team plan to recreate the excitement of previous live conventions. "We recognize the fact that the live convention is fun and we don’t want that to change some breaks, some comic relief, some entertainment are all ways we will be able to do that within a virtual realm, she says. We spoke to Nicole about how the PDAC Convention has evolved over the years, and what attendees can expect for the first-ever virtual Convention in 2021. Lisa Davis, a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, practiced corporate and securities law early in her profession. While undertaking some finance work for mining companies at that time, it was not until joining PearTree Canada that everything coalesced around minerals exploration and mining. Lisa is a member of PDAC’s Board of Directors, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, and is co-chair of the Finance & Taxation Committee. Amongst her PDAC activities..., Lisa dedicates time at PDAC to incorporating policies and practices around diversity. With small exploration companies often lacking the tools and resources to tackle issues facing marginalized groups, Lisa advocates for the adoption of the practices needed throughout the industry more broadly. As part of the Finance & Taxation Committee, the five-year Mineral Exploration Tax Credit renewal was monumental for investment in and the growth of Canada’s mineral exploration sector. We spoke to Lisa to ask her what it is like being a woman in a male-dominated industry, and how the industry can cultivate more inclusive and diverse working environments. Mary Louise Hill is well known at PDAC for her work as a geologist and long ties to the organization. She found her very first job in mineral exploration coming to PDAC has an undergraduate student looking for a summer job! As an accomplished field geologist with more than 40 years experience in the Canadian Shield, U.S. Appalachians, Canadian Cordillera and Canadian Artic, she is now a Professor of Geology at Lakehead University and serves on the PDAC Board of Directors as w...ell as several committees. However, Mary Louise’s path to success was not without its challenges. In an industry largely dominated by men, her early days as a field geologist included many obstacles perpetrated by the lack of gender diversity. When I was a student, we still didn’t have laws protecting equity in employment. Job ads could be written to specify whether a male or female could apply, she tells us. So when I was interviewed for my very first summer job as a field geologist, I was sometimes told outright that I was not eligible because I was female. We spoke to Mary Louise about her experiences navigating a male-dominated industry and the changes she has witnessed throughout her career. Now there’s a lot more awareness of the benefits that equity and diversity and inclusion can bring. So I think this is a really good time to be a woman in this industry, she says. Watch the complete interview on the PDAC website now. -- As part of Women’s History Month, we are sharing the stories of some of the key women in Canada’s mineral exploration and development industry.
