Heirlooms aren't the only thing passed down from generation to generation. It's no secret that our DNA is inherited, but scientists are now discovering that trauma itself can also be passed down into future generations... Generational trauma, also referred to as intergenerational trauma or transgenerational trauma, is fairly young as a field of study, but we've already been making great discoveries in it. This kind of trauma can be blatant and physical or fairly silent, takin...g the form of small nuances in language and implications made from someone's life very early on. Trauma affects genetic processes which may lead to a heightened level of reactivity from those who experienced a great deal of trauma as a child or adolescent. Technically, everyone is susceptible to general trauma. They have found the greatest precursors to it are those coming from households with continual abuse, racism, and poverty. Some symptoms of GT may include hyper vigilance, a sense of shortened future, mistrust, high anxiety, panic attacks, depression, insomnia, and issues with self-esteem. With research backing the idea that trauma may lead to a dysfunctional immune system, there's a likelihood of increased autoimmune diseases or just a higher overall propensity for illness in sufferers with this type of trauma. Make sure to check back on Monday, where we'll talk more about what first steps to healing from Generational Trauma can look like. Have you heard of this type of trauma before?

If you're someone that struggles with mental exhaustion and anxiety, take a look at these tips that you can start practicing today, to help cope. Remove the stressor - Although not always possible, this is one of the quickest and best ways to reduce stress. Take a break - A critical component to alleviating the exhaustion can come in the form of rest giving yourself time to recharge. Rest can look like anything from a vacation, an extra day off work, or even a quick w...alk through nature every day. Exercise - Exercising does not need to be anything crazy or extremely strenuous. A walk around the nature preserve will suffice and help lower levels of cortisol. A convenient side effect of exercising more often is increased mood and lowered chronic stress. Try new relaxation techniques - Those who practice Yoga, Tai Chi, Biofeedback, Deep Breathing, Aromatherapy, and Massage more regularly report positive mental health. If you haven't tried any of them, I highly recommend picking one and trying it out this week. Get more sleep - While the hustle and bustle of life may re-energize us during the day, often when we neglect our sleep, our bodies and minds tend to suffer even more damage than we may think. Put yourself on an evening routine, and hold yourself accountable to it. Get in those 6-8 hours that your body desperately needs. Keep a gratitude journal - Feeling mentally exhausted may exacerbate the negative feelings we have throughout the day. Keeping a gratitude journal with us and writing in it every day will help combat those increased negative feelings and continue to put things into perspective for all that we truly have to be grateful for. Out of all of these techniques to help reduce mental exhaustion, which do you feel is the most beneficial for you?

Not all therapy looks the same, especially on the heels of all the mandatory isolation that 2020 brought into our lives. While many may prefer a traditional approach to therapy, social distancing has made that a challenge for some but not all therapists. With many utilizing teletherapy via Zoom or other video chat platforms, other therapists have started using different forms of ecotherapy based on the patient's preference or level of extroversion. Ecotherapy looks very dif...ferent for each therapist, but sessions can range from meeting a client in a backyard, a large park or forest, and even just walking trails. With research finding that simply being in nature helps to reduce levels of cortisol in people, it's not at all a surprise to see so many adapting to the times, and providing patients another way to continue their healing face to face. Have you done any sessions of ecotherapy this past year, or would you be open to doing so in the future?

Trying to eliminate pain merely strengthens its hold. It is better to uncover its meaning, include it as an essential part of our purpose, and embrace its potential to serve us. - Roberto Assagioli Many times throughout our lives, we are faced with disappointing circumstances and the inevitable feelings of remorse, frustration, anger, and betrayal that follow. When we sit with these feelings we either become stagnant and sink deeper, or we unearth a new level of energy to ...transform through the circumstance. Here are 3 quick tips to transform the frustrations we may feel into motivation. 1 Label and engage the negative emotion that you're actually feeling and give it a name. Is it anger, betrayal, remorse? Making sure we give it a name not only helps us better understand ourselves, it actually invites us to respond to that emotion directly. 2 Responding to the emotion is carried out by either our self-critic, or our self-coach. We want to only feed the self-coach in this situation as the self-critic is attempting to keep us down in these emotions for as long as possible. In turn, listening to our self-critic makes us the least productive version of ourselves, including lengthening the healing process. Encouraging the self-coach to take the spotlight will re-energize us and begin to push us towards a change. 3 The change that we need will only come about if we choose action over inaction. We must push through the self-critic talking to us, and engage with all of our energy towards listening to our self-coach. For a clearer picture, It helps to ask yourself "How will I feel in 90 days if I do nothing about this." Most people will respond "terrible" so it's best to keep this question in your back pocket, as an aid to provide you with a final boost of energy to act accordingly and finish processing the negative experience. If someone you know would benefit from these quick tips, tag them below so they can save this post too for future reference.
