Gros Morne National Park presents Margie Wilkes! I was born during the spring bird migration in nearby Point Pelee National Park where my father worked a...s an interpreter and my mother worked on the visitor gate. This set the stage for my life to come. Before I turned 5, my family moved to work at Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park. I grew up playing on the sandy beaches of Singing Sands, climbing down the cliffs to swim in the famous Grotto cave and snorkeling over the shipwrecks of the marine park, all the while learning about the natural world. My work with Parks Canada began in high school when I joined the research team at Bruce Peninsula National Park, where I caught, tagged and tracked Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes, and monitored rare orchids. During university, I worked as a naturalist in a number of Ontario’s Provincial Parks. My interest in insects drew me to Newfoundland to pursue a masters at Memorial University. Hiking Gros Morne National Park’s Long Range Traverse during that time opened my eyes to this magical landscape. Shortly thereafter, I joined Gros Morne’s Resource Conservation team. Now I work to protect the health of Gros Morne’s many ecosystems by contributing to important programs like management of moose populations, monitoring the regrowth of previously over-browsed forests, and helping to monitor species such as Rock Ptarmigan, Harlequin Ducks, and Atlantic Salmon. My lifetime of immersion in parks has led to a deep passion for protecting these special places. I am thrilled to contribute towards the conservation and protection of unique national parks like Gros Morne. Thanks to Margie for sharing your Parks Canada story with us!

On this date 47 years ago on January 12th 1974 at 11:45 am, Hull # 205 slid into Georgian Bay for the very first time at Collingwood Shipyards Collingwood Ont. It was a windy bitter cold morning as I stood with my father and Son Redfern on the pier at Collingwood.

TRAIL REROUTE NORTH OF LITTLE COVE ROAD In September the Tobermory Snowmobile Club was asked to relocate the trail north of Little Cove Rd to the location of th...e trail prior to 2008. This involved changing the location of the trail on the adjacent property, owned by Rick and Ashley Salen. When talking to Rick he suggested that the rerouted trail could also be used by the Bruce Trail. Subsequently an old logging road was discovered on the west side of Rick and Ashley’s driveway which was then opened up. On the east side of their driveway is a laneway leading to property owned by the Bruce Trail Conservancy. The east side of the driveway required that only 2 short sections of the unopened road allowance be cleared to connect to the laneway. As a result, the new trail crosses Rick and Ashley’s driveway at only one point and the Bruce Trail hikers no longer have to walk down Little Cove Rd. This is a WIN WIN situation for both Clubs! All this was accomplished by a combined effort by both clubs. A BIG THANK YOU goes to the following volunteers: From the Peninsula Bruce Trail Club -Tom Hall, John Grandy, John Whitworth, Owen & Marg Glendon, Rich & Sandra Moccia, and Laura Browne . From the Tobermory Snowmobile Club - Al Betterley, Mike Smith, Jody Munn, and Geoff Andress. And THE BIGGEST THANK YOU GOES TO RICK AND ASHLEY SALEN for permitting the trail reroute on their property. See more
