Our readers say it’s Sarah Baryluk. My kind of style is everything can be modified [but] everything is going to be hard no matter what level you’re at, and it’s just good vibes, she says. P.S. Baryluk was also voted best group fitness instructor. Full results of the Best of Thunder Bay are available at http://www.thewalleye.ca/january-2021/... Video by Keegan Richard

It’s all in the family at Norteños Taqueria with brothers Jamie and Dillon Baratta. We felt that there were no real Mexican restaurants in Fort William, so the location was an easy choice for us, says Jamie. Without the pandemic, Norteños Taqueria probably would have never happened,' says Dillon. Who is TBay’s Best Barista? Our readers say it’s Gary Mack at Bay Village Coffee. As Rebekah Skochinski writes in our cover story, A barista is more than someone who remembers your name or your orderthey are someone you grow to count on, a constant, a friendly face. Mack is that, and then some. Full results of the Best of Thunder Bay are available at http://www.thewalleye.ca/january-2021/

Andy Beaver’s intimate connection to the land and scenery around him began in his home community of Nibinamik First Nation. In describing his favourite photo, he says, There was a forest fire a few years back. It was dark outside, and I had my camera. You could hear the flames raging in the night and the northern lights were visible overhead. Just this huge green band over the fire. It only lasted a few seconds, and I snapped the shot. To commemorate WWII, local artist Mary McPherson designed this coin for the Royal Canadian Mint, inspired by her uncle, Rifleman Rudolph McPherson. He was tasked with using the Ojibway language in radio communications during the war, says McPherson, But at the same time, his siblings at home were being put into residential schools, where they weren’t allowed to speak Ojibway. Along the same lines, McPherson notes, My uncle Rudolph fought for Canada, but as a Status India...n, he didn’t have the right to vote. And if he had survived and come homeas his brothers did laterhe wouldn’t have been able to sit in a barroom with his fellow veterans. My dad clearly remembers barrooms with signs outside that said ‘No Indians Allowed.’ Mary McPherson designed this coin for the Royal Canadian Mint in 2019, inspired by her uncle, Rifleman Rudolph McPherson More in the story by Susan Goldberg http://www.thewalleye.ca/honouring-the-past/

Paul Shaffer is one of music’s cool guys. At FWCI, he met fellow musician Ricky Lazar, who was a drummer in The Fugitives (band leader Bobby Anuik was on vocals and guitar, Ian Rosser on guitar). They played covers at high school dances and at the Gardens on Saturday nights. They would put the plywood down on the ice and put up a stage and we’d have a dance, Shaffer says. There wasn’t exactly a coat check facility...so kids would just keep their coats onit’s kind of hard to be cool when you’re bundled up for winter. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope and today marks the 39th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. Writer Susan L. Goldberg.com caught up with local doctor, Geoff Davis, who recounted his visit to Fox's room at The Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel after Fox ended his legendary marathon just east of Thunder Bay. At the time, Fox's goal was to raise $24 million: one dollar from every Canadian. Today, more than $800 million has been raised in his name for cancer research, according to the The Terry Fox Foundation. This year, a virtual run is planned for September 20 https://terryfox.org/run/ More on Fox's legacy in our September issue and at http://www.thewalleye.ca/40-years-on/
