It was definitely not the usual spring and summer for the independent Times Square Suites. When the pandemic hit, it was a shock for everyone. But we never closed, says General Manager, Jacqui McMullen. The hotel maintained an occupancy of up to 80% throughout April and May, kudos to BC Hotel Association for offering special rates for healthcare workers and first responders, along with the owner’s philanthropic relationship with St. Paul's Hospital. It’s only a fraction of the revenue due to the discounted rates but it kept the team busy. Jacqui proudly speaks about their philosophy on supporting local businesses and charities that the pandemic has given them an opportunity to collaborate. We have to be sensitive to how we spend now since budgets have been affected. So we are not doing more, but doing it differently. Businesses such as accommodations can help plan get-togethers that follow provincial health and safety guidelines. Snowbirds spotted in Vancouver! Is Times Square already a popular spot for wintering snow birds? We are a condo style hotel with full kitchen, fireplace, in suite laundry and a shared rooftop patio with BBQ's. The majority of those who have chosen us over the years to escape their harsh winters are Canadians. We have regulars from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and the Yukon mainly. We think this year, we may see that increase. ... We adapt to all our guests needs. Special requests are quite common for longer stays in order to make this feel like a home away from home. We are happy to work together to make the stay as seamless as possible and every new request is interesting as it allows us to put the "hospitality" back into our role! This is something Covid 19 has changed since we cannot connect on such an interactive level in many ways at the moment. This winter we will also be offering suggestions for safe activities and ways to keep mind and body wellness integrated with a Vancouver lifestyle. These will be curated by all of our staff based on our own lifestyles and those of our families. We are also adapting our recycling program so guests have to participate a bit more but ultimately it will help us offset increased waste due to the Covid 19 protocols. Our mantra is "live local" and we want people to learn from us and teach us about our city as well! There is a lot to explore, enjoy and be affected by in Vancouver.
