Today's central bank announcement At 10 am eastern, the Bank of Canada made what was scheduled to be its 10th and final interest rate decision of 2020, one of the most active years in recent monetary history. After dropping its overnight rate three times in March, the Bank has held the line on rates since then, including today, but continues its massive quantitative easing program to support market liquidity.... As a result of the Bank’s moves, borrowing costs for your clients will remain very favourable as 2021 gets underway. Very interesting and incredibly strong message from Tiff Macklem, Governor of the Bank of Canada this morning: Our message to Canadians is that interest rates ...are very low, and they are going to be there for a long time. We recognize that Canadians, Canadian businesses are facing an unusual amount of uncertainty, and so we have been unusually clear about the future path for interest rates: If youve got a mortgage or if you are considering to make a major purchase [] you can be confident that interest rates will be low for a long time. This precise and unambiguous messaging from the Governor is good to see. Lots of work has been done to protect Canadian homeowners, but the support provided is deferring payments and adding interest to the mortgage. Homeowners are not getting a free ride; they still are required to maintain their current amortization and may face increased payments after the deferral period as a result. Skipping a mortgage payment is not like erasing it; it still needs to be paid to the bank, just at a later time.... I am not sure what a renter is going to do, this needs to be dealt with quickly, and with both the landlord and the tenant's issues in mind.
