If your son or daughter has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, you may have been introduced to the terms "positive symptoms" and "negative symptoms." But do you know what they are? Positive symptoms are feelings or behaviors that shouldn't be present. This includes hallucinations, hearing voices, paranoia, and delusions. Disorganized speech and behavior are also positive symptoms. Negative symptoms are feelings or behaviors that aren't present but should be. The inability to ...show emotion (also called "emotional bluntness"), withdrawing from social situations, and lack of motivation are all examples of negative symptoms. The thing about positive symptoms is that, even though they can be treated with antipsychotic medication, they're more or less out of our individual control. What's happening in the brain of someone with schizophrenia is something that can be managed, but not until the right medication is found. Negative symptoms, although they can be difficult to overcome, are more within a person's control. Someone with schizophrenia who's suffering from a lack of motivation can find strategies to deal with that problem. People with schizophrenia can work on improving their emotional bluntness. It's important to understand what positive and negative symptoms are so that you can help your loved one deal with them or, in some cases, learn to live with them.
