The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract has awarded Dr. David Al Adra this year’s SSAT Career Development Award for his project titled: "Immunomodulation of the Liver using Normothermic ex-vivo Machine Perfusion". Newsweek’s second annual publication of Top 10 Hospitals in the World ranked the University Health Network’s Toronto General Hospital fourth this year. The list, published earlier this spring, is a result of a ranking system developed by Newsweek in conjunction with Statista Inc., a global market research and consumer data company. COMPASS Trial researchers led by UHN Drs. Jennifer Knox (PI -medical oncologist), Steven Gallinger (surgical oncologist) and Faiyaz Notta (scientist), found that pancreatic cancers could be grouped into five different subtypes based on their genetic information. One subtype, referred to as Basal-like-A, was mainly found in advanced disease. Prior to this, only two subtypes of pancreatic cancer had been described. Toronto Faculty, Gonzalo Sapisochin and International Faculty, Fernando Rotellar led Integra’s first Laparoscopic Liver Course at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto last week. The intensive course focused on principles of advanced laparoscopic liver surgery, including hands-on training of the laparoscopic technique with a live animal.
