Today we introduce Dorothy Wong! Dorothy currently serves as the Manager of Operations. One of her favourite verses is Deuteronomy 31:6. The fact that God will never leave me nor forsake me continues to amaze me says Dorothy. She also loves to watch cooking shows even thought she doesn’t really cook unless you count boiling water and adding frozen dumplings and noodles :) The animal that she is currently obsessed with is the giraffe. Today we introduce Abigaille Alpay! Abigaille currently serves as the Communications Coordinator. Abigaille’s favourite season is winter, she loves the cold. Her favourite dessert is a Filipino dessert called ’Taho’. The next country she’d like to travel to is South Korea. After finishing the TCM’s Summer Internship in 2019, Abigaille went on to be an Outreach Worker for the community of Kingston-Galloway. This year, nothing has been what any of us expected due to the Covid-19 pandemic. God sometimes seems to do the unexpected. In particular, God chose to reveal the Good News of Christ’s birth to the Shepherds first. In Judean society, Shepherds led simple nomadic lives and were often despised because of their lowly status. In today’s society, the families and the communities that TCM serves are often seen in a similar light. This year, she had planned to come back for another summer but due to COVID-19, she wasn’t able to. One of the parts she’ll miss the most with the kids is when they do worship with them each morning. This was always a great way for them to wake up and get some energy out before Bible time! Last year, one of the kids' favourite songs was Deep Cries Out. In the late 1990's, Elliott felt a strong call to local urban missions. He came on staff at Toronto City Mission in the fall of 1999. After spending 4 years as an Outreach Worker in our Willowtree community, he served 5 more years at our St. James Town ministry site. Then for the next 10 years, Elliott served as TCM's Director of Outreach, and last summer he accepted his current position as Executive Director. This September he will be celebrating 21 years of service at TCM. ...At Toronto City Mission, we are motivated by the importance of building lasting, sustainable relationships with both our partners and those we serve. Over the years, Elliott has been overjoyed at the lasting relationships that he has been blessed with. Alana first joined TCM as a summer intern at Kingston-Galloway in 2019. During the first half of the camp, the Bible curriculum was based around the story of Daniel. At one point, the leaders had read the story of Daniel and the Lions’ Den. With this in mind, Alana led a craft activity where she taught how to make fun and adorable lions with popsicle sticks. Mississauga Christ Life Community Church (MCLCC) was started in 2017 with the vision of preaching and living out Gospel truths to impact those in our community. Pastor Daniel Leung came on as the English pastor in October 2018. At this time, while visiting a fellowship of other English ministers/pastors in the GTA, he met Steve Chu who told him about TCM. As he spent more time with the youth in his church, he realized that almost none of them could identify a personal experie...nce with God even though many of them grew up in the church. He recalled how he encountered God on missions trips which led him to organize a short term mission trip and remembered TCM. Pastor Daniel and his team served the Kingston-Galloway community and it was a blessing to have them on board! These photos were taken throughout the week. One memory in particular was when the summer interns hosted a The Great Banquet based on the parable found in Luke 14:15-24. The Great Banquet was one of his most cherished memories of the week. What a great reminder of how God the Father invites us to His table! Dorothy loved it when she heard the children say "This is the best day ever!" What always made her smile were the stories the kids would tell. Today we will try to capture these storytelling moments by creating our own mad lib story.... 1) Write a short story. 2) Highlight the words that you would like replaced. 2) Find out what kind of words they are (i.e. noun, verb, adjective, etc.) 3) List them in order and send them to a friend to fill in 4) Fill in the story with the words your friend provided. 5) Have a good laugh as you read the "new" story together. Captain Don Paterson (Executive Director, 1980-1993) always said Toronto City Mission (TCM) was the first organization in Toronto to take children out of the city to Fresh Air Camp. The original camp was on a farm near Bronte. Under his leadership, the first Sonshine Day Camps began.
