Even though the water is not heading south into Lake Ontario anymore this year, the gorgeous 9m tall, motion-sensored "Light Showers", by Jill Anholt, are still lighting one of the approaches to the East Bayfront! This time last year I spent my birthday in Detroit with my beautiful wife! We had just finished visiting what I consider to be the greatest single museum exhibit that I have ever seen! The And Still We Rise exhibit at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, is a visit I will never forget!... Absolutely phenomenal, and a MUST VISIT! "The 22,000-square foot exhibition contains more than 20 galleries that allow patrons to travel over time and across geographic boundaries. The journey begins in Africa, the cradle of human life. Witness several ancient and early modern civilizations that evolved on the continent. Cross the Atlantic Ocean, experience the tragedy of the Middle Passage, and encounter those who resisted the horrors of bondage, emancipated themselves, and sometimes took flight by way of the Underground Railroad." I look forward to seeing you again soon Detroit!!! P.s photography was not allowed, and honestly wouldn't even begin to do the exhibit and museum justice. #TorontoFreeWalkingTours #tours #history #realhistory #historytours #toronto #detroit #African #AfricanAmerican #HistoryMuseum #CharlesHWrightMuseum #AndStillWeRise #exhibit #thankyou

The films and shows IT, Designated Survivor, Fahrenheit 451, Orphan Black (and more), have all been filmed in part at the Cranfield House mansion on Pape Ave in Riverdale, Toronto! The interior was recently the spooky set for the creepy IT movie, a sequel to the earlier Steven King version! Have you ever had the chance to go inside the 120 year old former home of a meat packing baron?... Do you have a personal story about the mansion? It's likely there won't be any filming there anytime soon, as the property is being put to good use again, as it is being completely revamped as a women's and children's shelter! Nellies Shelter, shelter, education and advocacy for all women and children, will be using the property once finished! #tours #torontofreewalkingtours #guide #hollywood #north #hollywoodnorth #toronto #IT #movies #filmset #cranfieldhouse #riverdale #horror #horrorfilms #tvshows

The top and east side of Pottery Road was not pretty. Some of the residents of 1048 Broadview, the Minto Skyy building, do love throwing lots of stuff from thei...r balconies. Used diapers, candles and piks for your teeth show up again and again. This our third time this year cleaning this spot. Numerous discussions with management and vague promises have not done much to improve things. Calls to the city have resulted in did you see them throwing garbage? The building to the north, the housing co-op seems very very fond of vodka. Again, every clean up we are seeing the same items over and over again. Dairy Queen, which is usually not too bad when it comes to fast food places, had a lot of trash up and down the hill. Not on their own property mind you. Spoke to the boss at DQ. A dramatic shoulder shrug and a not my problem was his best response. clean for now and thanks for all the shout outs and waves

How depressing is the core becoming? My goodness. Cars, concrete, condos, coffee chains, crap food and cannabis shops!... This is on Front St right next to the soon to be open cannabis shop (in fact there are two new ones literally on one block), and the LCBO by the market. Rant over.

Blurry group photos are the best and dont let anyone tell you otherwise! This morning I had a wonderful time with guests from Ireland, Canada, Vietnam, England, Australia and New Zealand! Everyone was born here or has recently moved here, so, sadly there are still hardly any visitors coming. I think it will stay that way for a while, as the borders remain mostly closed, and people are still a little hesitant to travel.... Thanks to this great group of Canadians and new Canadians though!!! Tours are still available every Saturday at 10am, and are booked via email or phone! #Torontofreewalkingtours #FreeTour #FreeWalkingTours #WalkingTours #History #Heritage #historytour #Distillery #DistilleryDistrict #WalkingTour #Saturday #tourism #experiencetoronto #experiencetorontotours #tourismcounts #StaycationON

An incredible new, open air street art project by @start_streetartoronto This homage to our planet's blood, water, is a collaboration of almost two dozen Indigenous/aboriginal, artists from across this vast country. I spoke with a lovely Plains Cree artist from outside of Edmonton, and she shared some fascinating insight into the work, her life and art, history, Water Carriers, and of course the message behind the art!... Amazing work everyone! The pieces are almost finished, so head down to Eastern and Coxwell to appreciate the art, and more importantly, think about and appreciate the message! #streetart #streetarttoronto #start #toronto #graffiti #graffitiart #water #cleanwater #bloodofourplanet #watercarriers #nativeart #indigenous #aboriginal #murals #newart #Torontofreewalkingtours #KeepOurCityClean

What stands today as the only living memory of Egerton Ryersons Toronto Normal School, is ironically one of my favourite facades in the city! The buildings in the square within Ryerson University campuses St. James Square are long gone, and the area is of course now Ryerson University. The original school was a bold (and stunning architectural), answer to the Province of Canada, and previous Upper Canadas reluctance to offer general education to the masses. Prior to the m...id 19th century there was hardly a concept of public and universal education, or common/public schools. For over 50 years in Toronto and York (Town of York before City of Toronto), the basic concept of education was essentially for the Tory elite, and certainly geared for boys only. Illiteracy was the norm. Children worked if and where needed. School? Unlikely for the masses. The Toronto Normal School was created to train elementary-school teachers, deriving its name Normal School from the idea that aspiring student teachers were instructed in methods that conformed to the norms expected of their profession. - Taylor On History. The reformers gained so much ground by the 1840s, in the unified Province of Canada and here in Canada West, that a new Common School Act was passed for the Canadas, and municipalities were allowed to levy taxes for common schools. Tory Toronto initially said no, and it led to the likes of Egerton Ryerson changing the world of education in Toronto forever in the early 1850s. Visit Enoch Turner School in Corktown, the oldest standing free school in the city of Toronto, and learn more about Egerton Ryerson, essentially the most influential person in the history of Canadian schooling. #toronto #Canada #TorontoFreeWalkingTours #FreeTour #FreeWalkingTours #WalkingTours #History #Heritage #ryerson #egertonryerson #normal #school #commonschool #public #education
