Looking forward to Kareem-Anthony Ferreira's solo exhibition later this spring. Examining identity through the lens of a first-generation Canadian with Trinidadian heritage, Ferreira explores the ways in which personal, social and familial connections coalesce to create hybrid experiences, wholly unique, yet rooted in multiple places at once. @kareemanthony.artist #towardsgallery

While the gallery is currently closed in accordance with current health guidelines, we are pleased to announce our current exhibition, Wake Up the Statues, by Maria Trabulo. Trabulo’s multi-disciplinary practice investigates the role that images and artifacts play in shaping the social, political, and cultural narratives that we tell ourselves as societies. Her work examines notions of remembrance, personal and collective histories, as well as the alteration and restitution ...of political images. Full documentation can be viewed on our website via the link in bio @mariatrabulo #towardsgallery #wakeupthestatues

While we've had to postpone the opening of Maria Trabulo's exhibition "Wake Up the Statues" in accordance with the recent provincial health guidelines, we thought we'd use this opportunity to highlight some of the process and stories behind this layered body of work. Since 2018, Trabulo has been collaborating with three NGOs: Heritage for Peace (based in Barcelona) the Syrian Heritage Archive Project (based in Berlin), and The Day After (based in Istanbul) to help archive ...photographic records of artifacts that have disappeared in Syria during the ongoing civil war. Unfortunately, the vast majority of documented artifacts consist of only a single image, and information about dimensions or material is rarely known. "Wake Up the Statues" is a response to this process. Trabulo has begun to convert some of the digital images of missing artifacts into new sculptures. Through this contemporary interpretation, she aims to prevent the stories and histories contained in these archives from disappearing into oblivion. Tristan Unrau's "Angels" was painted from a photograph taken of a tree growing down the street from his Los Angeles apartment. The flowers depicted, Brugmansia or more often referred to as "Angel's Trumpets", are highly sought after, widely planted, and loved by gardeners all while being extremely poisonous. The plant's casual but pervasive presence throughout Los Angeles, despite their toxicity, creates a strange aura both alluring and unverving at the same time ... heralding back to the city itself. The gallery is open 126pm today through Saturday, make an appt to view this exhibition via the link in bio. #tristanunrau #towardsgallery #50millionyears See more

Tristan Unrau's fantastic painting "The Hard Path" is part of his current exhibition at the gallery. Inspired by the verdant landscapes of the Sunshine Coast where he has spent many summers, for this exhibition the painting is paired with a poem by the modernist poet Wallace Stevens titled "On the Road Home". An excerpt appears below. ...You You said, There are many truths, But they are not parts of a truth.... Then the tree, at night, began to change, Smoking through green and smoking blue. We were two figures in a wood. We said we stood alone. It was when I said, Words are not forms of a single word. In the sum of the parts, there are only the parts. The world must be measured by eye;... We are open 126pm today and tomorrow. Use the link in bio to make an appointment to visit us. #tristanunrau #towardsgallery #50millionyears See more
