Special Olympics BC mourns the passing of Howie Meeker, an unforgettable sport icon and an influential and inspiring friend to our movement for more than four d...ecades, who died today at the age of 97. Howie Meeker was a Canadian hockey legend, as a player, coach, and iconic broadcaster. For more than 40 years, he was also a powerful champion of Special Olympics athletes and programs, both nationwide and right here in B.C. With his influential and generous advocacy work, Meeker helped change the way our province and country see individuals with intellectual disabilities. He was also been a vital supporter of Special Olympics BC Campbell River athletes and programs for many years, championing them and lending his name and time to their annual golf tournament that has raised more than $750,000 in its more than 30-year history. Meeker made a significant impact on the Special Olympics movement an impact that has not only benefited our athletes, programs, and society over the past 40 years, but one that will continue to help change lives long into the future. He was inducted into the SOBC Hall of Fame in 2016 in recognition of the difference he has made in the lives of so many. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Howie’s wife Leah and many loved ones. Read more: https://www.specialolympics.ca//sobc-honours-unforgettable

I hope this is ok to tell a story about the goodness in people. I work at the Tackle Shack at Pacific Playgrounds. I see a lot of different happenings. Well on ...Thursday a guide named Don {Slabrador] had a chartwer booked. This cl;ient was a nice young lady (caregiver) to a severely physically challenged young man. The tide was fairly low so getting a wheelchair dow the ramp would be a challenge. Well, as I said, goodness in people. Rob (a fellow boater with his boat moored in the marina)came to help Don get this client down the ramp, then the two of them had to carefully lift the young man in his wheelchair over the rail of the boat and down onto the deck of the boat without dumping him into the water. Now let me back up a second, when this young lady (caregiver) came up to the Tackle Shack to as if this was where she caught the charter, she was fairly bouncing with excitement and the young man in the wheelchair seemed equally excited. Well, Don and Rob had the clients securely on board.Don took them out and I understand that the youg man was able to reel in a fish as did the caregiver. Don then took them yo see sea lions and whales. A great day for them Im sure. Then reason I want to tell this story is that I think Don (Slabrador) did an amazing thing to make a special day for these people and he and Rob went above and beyond to help these people have it special. Its not easy to do a charter like this and I know there arent a lot of people who would put in the extra effort. Don (Slabrador) you were a hero that day and I WANT IT RECOGNIZED See more
