January is Glaucoma Awareness Month Did you know that glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada? Glaucoma is generally associated with increased fluid pressure in the eye, however, damage can also occur when eye pressure is normal. As a result, symptoms don't always present, and the disease can go unnoticed. A comprehensive eye examination is often the only way to detect glaucoma. We are open, with Covid-19 protocols in place. Moments ago, the Ontario government declared a second provincial emergency. The government is also issuing a stay-at-home order. EffectiveThursday, January 14at 12:01 a.m., everyone is required to remain at home with exceptions for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for essential work.... At this time, it does not appear that optometrists are affected by these new measures. We look forward to seeing you at your appointment. If there are any changes to your appointment, we will contact you directly.
Yesterday, Premier Doug Ford togetherwith the Ministry of Health, and Public Health announced a province-wide lockdown effective December 26th at 12:01 AM. We're looking forward to seeing you if you have an appointmentin the next 28 days. We will continue to diligently follow Covid-19 protocols in compliance with the College of Optometrists of ...Ontario, and Public Health Ontario, as the health and safety of our patients, staff, and community is a top priority. Thank you for your continued support during these difficult times. From our families to yours, we wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.

HELP US SAVE EYE CARE IN ONTARIO! Please visit SaveEyeCare.ca for more information.
The following is a very important letter to all of our patients: Help us Save Eye Care in Ontario Dear patients,... Optometrists like yours are the backbone of Ontario’s vision care and eye health system. But, for more than 30 years, governments have failed to invest in eye care. As a result, OHIP now only covers half the cost of an eye exam. Optometrists pay the rest out of their own pocket $173 million every year. Before the pandemic, this situation was unfair and unsustainable. But today, with optometry practices beginning the process of gradually re-opening, many optometrists are facing a crisis. To comply with physical distancing directives from the government and the College of Optometrists of Ontario, optometrists can only see half the number of patients they did before COVID-19. This will wipe out nearly two million comprehensive eye exams over the next 12 months. With statistics showing that 1 in 3 Ontarians will have some form of vision-threatening eye disease by the age of 65, finding a sustainable solution is ever more pressing. The Ontario government needs to open its eyes to a crisis that’s about to become visible for all to see. Help us save eye care in Ontario. Visit our website SaveEyeCare.ca and tell the Ontario government to reform OHIP for a more sustainable eye care system. We owe it to our parents and grandparents, our children and grandchildren, to find a better way forward. Thank you, Sheldon Salaba President, Ontario Association of Optometrists
