The volunteers at Turtle Pond are currently caring for over 100 animals waiting for a spring release. Like these two cedar waxwings that missed their fall migration. One has recovered from injuries sustained from a window strike. The other needed time to molt out damaged and underdeveloped feathers. These gentle, social birds are enjoying a wide variety of fresh fruits, especially blackberries, while waiting for the summer weather to return.
We did not expect to have a turtle as one of our first admissions of 2021. This young common snapping turtle was brought in by a well intentioned person who attempted to care for it after it hatched over 16 months ago. The yearling arrived weak and extremely underweight and his eyes were swollen shut due to nutritional deficiencies. Happily, after weeks of care, including a thorough exam by Dr. Nicole, the little snapper began to respond to treatment. His eyesight returned and shortly afterwards so did his appetite. Fish are his favorite. Way to go little one!!
Good morning everyone. We are looking for help with transport for an injured woodpecker in Englehart. We have a driver willing to travel from Sudbury towards Englehart but hoping to find someone travelling from Englehart down towards hwy 17 to meet up with her today. If anyone can help, please text Gloria at 705-691-0433. Thank you all for your continued support.
If you thought baby turtles couldn’t get any cuter, think again. Research from the University of Toronto has found that baby snapping turtle hatchlings produce sounds including clicks and squeaks. The discovery that hatchling snapping turtles produce vocalizations opens up questions about turtle social behaviour, an oft-neglected subject in reptile biology. http://cottagelife.com//snapping-turtle-vocalizations-and/
Update: Unfortunately ride no longer required. Hello all, Another Snowy owl in critical condition requires transport from Field ( Hwy 17 east) to Sudbury area as soon as possible. If anyone is available to assist please text Gloria at 705-691-0433. Thank you.
We're participating in the Ontario Wildlife Rescue fundraising calendar initiative again this year! All profits support animal care at Turtle Pond. 2021 wall calendars are now available from the centre for $18 each. The calendars feature photos of wild animals from 24 wildlife centres from across Ontario. All of them were cared for and released back into the wild. The dimensions are 8.5 x 11 (11 x 17 when open). You can pick up your calendar from the centre on weekdays after 4 p.m. or during the day on weekends (2882 Vern Drive, Val Caron - centre is at the end of the driveway). Cash preferred. You can also find them at Tail Blazers (Four Corners beside RBC), Pet Value (Southridge Mall), Land and Sea Aquatics (463 Falconbridge Rd (New Sudbury). Thanks for your support!
Sorry gang. We’re having issues with our tshirt fundraiser. We will repost the link once it’s working properly.
Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre volunteers have been busy caring for the over 700 wildlife admissions so far in 2020. A mangy fox is one example of a typical admission. We have had numerous foxes infested with this burrowing mite this year. This debilitating condition causes hair loss, thickening and crusting of the skin and intense itchiness. Secondary conditions such as infections of open sores and eyes as well as heavy infestations of intestinal parariites are also common. Li...kely, mange IS treatable and the vast majority of our mange admissions have fully recovered. Support from northern communities continues to be paramount in allowing us to continue to treat our local wildlife. Wild animals that otherwise would have nowhere to go for help. Please consider donating to our cause. We are now a registered charity which now allows us to issue tax receipts. We accept etransfers at [email protected] and on our website http://turtlepondwc.com . See more
Update: Ride found. Owl delivered this morning. Thank you to all responders. Hello wildlife supporters. There is an injured owl in Timmins that needs transport to us asap. If you can help please text Gloria at 705-691-0433. Thank you.
A NORTHERN PATIENT Arriving all the way from Sudbury, Ontario this beautiful fox is recovering from both a fractured leg and arm! It is assumed he was hit by a... car but quick acting rescuers got him to Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre in Sudbury. They engaged a local vet hospital to splint his legs and then had him transported to SOH for further assessment and care. There is a long rehab ahead for this guy but so far, he is enjoying a plentiful supply of food and the comfort of a safe place to hide. Here's hoping the weeks ahead will bring continued healing and improvement. https://www.shadesofhope.ca/donate.html See more

A raccoon story. We have taken in dozens of orphaned raccoons this season. A typical scenario resulting in orphans is mom being trapped and relocated. Several days later the hungry babies are discovered. Please spread the message that raccoons frequenting sheds, garages and other outbuildings in the spring are usually moms with babies. Please contact Turtle Pond for advice when conflicts with raccoons occur. Thank you to our one of our 2020 interns, Melodie, for putting this beautiful video together. Enjoy.

The first turtle egg of the season is hatching. We are so excited!! We currently have Blandings turtle, common snapping turtle, midland painted turtle and a few map turtle eggs in our incubator. Most of the eggs were harvested from deceased female turtles that were fatally injured by motor vehicles. We are hopeful that over the next few months we will have over 50 new hatchlings.
