On this day in 1945, the Second World War officially came to an end. The war was the largest, deadliest and most destructive in history. This year we come together as a country and as people of the world, to celebrate their victories and to remember the lives lost during one of the most trying periods in modern human history. Lest We Forget.

Happy Canada Day everyone!

On June 6th, 1944 also known as D-Day, some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of Frances Normandy region. Normandy was the beginning of 11 months of hard fighting in Northwest Europe. Canadians would also go on to play an important role in bitter struggles at places like the Scheldt, the Rhineland and the Netherlands during the Allied offensives that would eventually help defeat the Germ...ans and see Victory in Europe (V-E) Day declared on May 8, 1945. Canada’s impressive efforts in the Second World War remain a point of great national pride, even many decades later. The brave Canadians who came ashore on D-Day and saw action in the Battle of Normandy were among the more than one million men and women from our country who served in the cause of peace and freedom during the conflict. Sadly, over 45,000 of them would lose their lives. Lest We Forget on this day and always.

Comrades, We were all shocked and saddened to hear about the horrible accident in Kamloops over the weekend that took the life of Capt. Jenn Casey and injured Capt. Richard MacDougall. Our deepest sympathies go out to Capt. Casey’s family and friends as well as her larger military family. Kamloops Branch #52 is planning a tribute for Capt. Casey on Thursday May 21 at 11:00 am at the Kamloops Airport round-a-bout. They don’t yet have any details on whether the tribute will be streamed live. Please check the Kamloops Legion Facebook page for more information and updates.

Robert George, a fellow member of The Royal Canadian Legion and a retired naval officer of the RCN, wrote to us asking for our assistance. Due to Covid-19, they have had to cancel their golf tournament event this year. In the past they have raised more than $100,000 each year in support of the Veterans at Broadmead. Several veterans on the committee are still trying to make up for the loss of some thousands of dollars this year. Individually they are on their way to raising... over $20,000 and are now attempting to raise more with some Stay ’N Play online events in early June (watch www.broadmeadcare.com ). They have organized a raffle for a diamond ring valued at over four thousand dollars! If you would like to be apart of the raffle, tickets can be purchased online at www.broadmeadcare.com/diamond-raffle Any support you can give to them for the benefit of Veterans at Broadmead would be greatly appreciated during this time.

A message from Premier John Horgan about the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe!

RCL Branch 44 TVS 12.06.2020

75 years ago German forces in North-West Europe surrendered. Victory in Europe, or VE, Day was officially celebrated three days later, on this day, May 8th! In Germany, where the Canadian Army fought right to the last day, soldiers were too relieved to celebrate very much. In Paris and London, Canadians joined people in the streets in an outpouring of emotion. In Toronto, thousands danced in the streets while three Mosquito aircraft dropped tickertape overhead (pictured below!).
