Proudly presenting UBC Public Scholar and DMA piano candidate Benjamin Hopkins, who recently commissioned two pieces with political contexts based on today’s global events: Joel Thompson's "My Dungeon Shook - 3 American Preludes," and Peter Shin's "ravel's miroirs no. 3 but you're dissociating at your recital." Next up on Wednesday Noon Hours: Indigenous cellist Cris Derksen presents a unique concert of works for cello and electronics, blending classical music with traditional Indigenous music! Tune in November 18 at noon: https://vimeo.com/475639760 Juno-nominated Cris Derksen, originally from Northern Alberta, Canada, is an internationally respected Indigenous cellist and composer. Derksen braids the traditional and contemporary, weaving her classical background and her Indigen...ous ancestry together with new school electronics to create genre-defying music. As a composer she has her foot in many worlds working in choral, symphonic, film, theatre and dance, with a new commission from the Calgary Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra premiering in 2020. As a performer Derksen performs nationally and internationally. Recent destinations include Hong Kong, Australia, Mongolia, Europe, Mexico and a whole lot of Canada: the place Derksen refers to as home. See more
