From December 9 to January 24, @billreidgallery is hosting Lifeways, a film exhibition featuring the work of SALA students in Annie Liang’s option studio. Bringing together local Haida, academics, storytellers and an international group of design students, these films are part of a process for reconciliation. The stories reflect on self, community and spirit - an epic of humanity and nature coming together under the pressures of social, environmental, economic and political unrest. It is a set of animated stories inspired by the supernatural beings found in Haida mythology. This exhibition explores the formation of identity by reimagining the community, spirit and place we know as Haida Gwaii. The work can be seen in person, online at lifewaystudio.org, or live on Zoom on December 9 through @eudaemonia.network

SALA SALON is an event run solely by students. It is an occasion for friends, family, instructors, mentors, and the community to see the graduate thesis work undertaken at SALA and the progress the students have made throughout their education. It is also an opportunity for graduating students to be able to talk about and share their interests, and to connect with professionals in the industry. In the strange and uncertain circumstances of 2020, the graduated students have turned their attention to this publication of work in lieu of an exhibition. This years student work includes a broad range of unique themes such as urban revitalization, political spaces, machine landscapes, memory and emotion, climate change, contested spaces, dreams, and reality. On September 9 and 10, academics across Canada will be taking part in Scholar Strike Canada to protest anti-Black, racist, and colonial police brutality in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere: https://scholarstrikecanada.ca/ Scholar Strike originated in the U.S from a tweet by Dr. Anthea Butler who, inspired by the striking WNBA and NBA players, put out a call for a similar labour action from academics. The Canadian action is aligned with the one in the U.S., in its call for rac...ial justice, an end to anti-Black police violence and it adds a specific focus on anti-Indigenous, colonial violence. In addition to the teach-ins listed on the Scholar Strike Canada website, the SALA Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee has assembled a list of events and talks related to the design field, as well as other events related to racial justice: https://docs.google.com//1Ksc3IE5oCSV84Bm9i83rktPbTH/edit

The projects of springs LARC 502 design studio, led by assistant professor Fionn Byrne and adjunct professor Stephanie Braconnier, have been compiled in a new publication, Change in Common: Climate Change and the Future of the Yard. This collection of design research asked: what is the form and appearance of responsible actions that community members can take within their yards to address contemporary environmental issues? The yard provides a setting through which to explore... the role of individual residents in contributing to the collective challenges facing our society. While the first residents of Vancouver did not concern themselves with climate change, residents today face the combined challenges of species extinction and a warming city. Although we can lament the commitment of so much dubiously claimed land to private and individual ownership, students worked within this spatial reality to envision new futures for the yard. A letter to the SALA community from Director Ron Kellett: On the 11th of June 2020, 230 concerned SALA students and alumni wrote me and my faculty colleagues to call the school to action around the problems of structural racism. I thank them for a persuasive and thoughtful letter that everyone should read for themselves. A copy is linked here. At its heart was deep care for SALA and the betterment of our community, professions and society that we serve. Its message urged the ...School to acknowledge that individuals and communities have experienced real distress from inadequate equity and diversity practices present in SALA and the broader academic and professional communities of which we are a part. This letter challenged SALA to acknowledge complicity in these practices and challenged the School to not only accept responsibility to improve conditions within SALA, but to also accept the urgency of change moving through society and become a leader, and an exemplar, for others. Prominent among the issues and recommendations were concerns for greater institutional accountability and transparency; faculty diversity; equity in the content, voices, and perspectives represented in the Schools academic, research, and outreach activities; and, lowering of discriminatory barriers and disincentives to equity in recruitment, admissions, academic progress, and access to professions. A huge congratulations to graduating MLA student Lys Divine Ndemeye on being named 2020 Olmsted Scholar and the recipient of the $25,000 prize from the Landscape Architecture Foundation. From LAF: "Multi-lingual and a leader and active volunteer in various social change organizations, Divine sees the landscape as a key cultural marker and maker that can play a powerful role in spatial decolonization and empowering marginalized communities towards cultural affirmation and identity."

"On behalf of the University, I condemn and denounce all incidents of anti-Black and anti-Asian racism and the continued racism and oppression that is directed ...at Indigenous communities. We must work together to dismantle the tools of oppression and white supremacy that remain prevalent and entrenched in our everyday systems. It is my hope that at least here at UBC, we can work to model a different kind of community one where we embrace difference and work to build each other up while enacting values of dignity, mutual respect, and justice." The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a huge increase in need for personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline healthcare workers. While traditional sources of PPE are trying to keep up with demand, the design community has stepped in to offer their expertise and resources. A group of SALA faculty, staff, and students have joined this effort, and in collaboration with the BC COVID-19 3D printing group, have been producing much-needed supplies. Drawing on her recently published book, "Living on Campus: An Architectural History of the American Dormitory," Yanni identifies how architects responded sweeping societal changes and transformations in higher education. Today, we are remembering Gordon Smith, the celebrated B.C. artist who passed away on Saturday at the age of 100. A few years ago, Smith welcomed author Michael Prokopow and photographer Michael Perlmutter to document the stunning Arthur Erickson-designed home he shared with his wife, Marion. The result was the monograph Smith House II, part of our West Coast Modern House series. In the foreword, Douglas Coupland details the warm and inviting atmosphere that the Smiths created within their home: "...Its how I got to know the house, through the lens of them together; the kitchen, the old studio (now Gordons office), Marions upstairs work area where she kept her loom, the various levels of patio, the driveway,...the...to be honest, every bit of that property provides only happy memories for me of the two of them."

SALA is proud to support the world premiere of Douglas Cardinal: Architect of the Future, as part of the Architecture and Design Film Festival Vancouver. Architect Douglas Cardinals path in life has seldom been as smooth as the lines on the buildings he designs. An Anishinaabe raised in Blackfoot territory, Cardinals curvilinear vision has produced instantly-recognizable monuments to Indigenous culture in the national capitals of both Canada and the United States to world ...acclaim. But even his landmark successes have not come without controversy. The film, directed by Andre Cazabon, offers an intimate portrait of an artist guided by his Anishnaabe culture to uplift humanity towards hope and social justice. A panel featuring Douglas Cardinal, Andre Cazabon, Kelly Edzerza-Bapty, Patrick Stewart, and Scott Kemp will follow the film. Tickets are available now!
