Let’s Meet our Leads for 2020-2021! First up is our Co-Mechanical Lead, Yichen! Working as one the Mechanical Co-leads this year, I'll be facilitating everything from design to manufacturing and testing. You can obviously see this means I'll be speaking to team members lots through the year.... Being a soccer, mechanics, and robotics enthusiast, joining Thunderbots has allowed me to express my passions through engineering design while being a member of a close-knit group. I've since had the opportunity to help design the drivetrain and dribbler while learning about mechanical design from team members across a variety of disciplines. I look forward to completing the re-design of our robot and running our new dribbler and Geneva drive at competition this coming year! Reminder that our applications are open now! Graduating Member Highlight! Ben has been on Thunderbots since 2016 and has just recently graduated from Electrical Engineering. During his time on the team he mainly worked on PCB and Hardware development. He also spent a lot of time mentoring our younger students with Altium. Ben’s favourite part of being on the team was working with, and learning from such an incredible pool of talented and intelligent people. He credits most of his success and real world experience ...to Thunderbots. Ben! Thank you for everything you’ve done for Thunderbots. Best of luck working as a machine learning engineer for the UBC Faculty of Medicine this fall

Graduating Co-Captain Highlight! UBC Thunderbots owes a massive thank-you to Mathew. He has been with the team since his first year at UBC, and has been Co-Captain of the team since 2019. Not only was he an awesome technical contributor, he was also an amazing team leader. He never shied away from a challenge, and always did so with a huge smile on his face. Often, Mathew was the glue that kept the team together, he constantly reassured our talents and ability to succeed. Hi...s passion for Thunderbots is unparalleled. Even with all his duties as captain, this year he was responsible for creating a simulation software that would allow the software team to continue their work remotely - invaluable given the current state of of the world. Mathew, we can’t begin to show enough gratitude for your leadership, technical expertise, and countless hours of gruelling administrative work. We love you so much and you will be sincerely missed. You’ve left a lasting impression on the team and we can’t wait to make you proud in the years to come! As much as we hate to say goodbye we know you are destined for a great future. Good luck at Carbon 3D this fall. They are surely lucky to have you! :time_to_pass_away_with_friends:

Graduating Co-Captain Highlight! Evan, on behalf of all of UBC Thunderbots we have to extend an enormous thank you for everything you have put into our team. Evan joined in 2015, and has been Co-Captain of the team since 2019. Evan was a technical force to be reckoned with, often spending multiple long stints at Robocup writing code for our robots (known to go without food or bathroom breaks for 8+ hours ). This man always did what it took to get the work done, and done w...ell, no matter what. A lesson the team will carry forward indefinitely. This year he worked tirelessly on a brand new and advanced controller for our robots’ movement, alongside all of his duties as captain. One of the many things that made Evan and incredible Co-Captain despite his work ethic, was his willingness to mentor any member on the team. He was always there to lend a hand to troubleshoot an issue, whether the problem was mechanical, electrical, or software related. He even gladly spent time with students on academic and career advice. There’s no doubt that this recent UBC MECHA program graduate, who’s starting a promising career at Attabottics, has an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Evan, we can’t begin to thank you enough for all the grit you’ve brought to the team. We will miss you dearly and we promise to do everything in our power to continue the success that you fostered while Co-Captaining the team. :time_to_pass_away_with_friends:

Graduating Member Highlight! Hannah has been a crucial member to our team ever since she joined in 2017 and has just recently graduated from ECE. Starting out as an electrical member, she quickly progressed into an amazing electrical lead. Hannah has always been a key technical contributor, from sensitive sensors to high power electronics; what really made her an incredible leader was her passion for teaching, supporting, and mentoring her team - whether it was TBOTs, school ...or general life related. This year she focused on providing the electrical team with all the tools to complete an overhaul and redesign of the electrical systems of our robots. Hannah, on behalf of the entire team we literally cannot thank you enough for everything you’ve done over the years. You will be greatly missed! You never fail to make us laugh during the tough times, and sticking it out with us all to find solutions for as long as necessary. We have no doubt you’ll be extremely successful wherever your career takes you!

Graduating Member Highlight! Haomiao has just recently graduated from the mechatronics program at UBC, and has been on UBC Thunderbots since 2018. Despite studying Mechatronics, Haomiao made major contributions to the software team - specifically primitives that dictate our robots’ fundamental motions. UBC Thunderbots thanks you for all of your hard work over the last two years. We don’t doubt you’ll have great success in your grad studies with the CARIS group at UBC. Best of luck!

Graduating Member Highlight! Graham just recently graduated from ECE and has been with Thunderbots since 2015. During his time on the team he focused on FPGA work and High Voltage Circuitry within the electrical sub-team. Though Graham’s fondest memory dates back to baking his first PCB, he really enjoyed getting the opportunity to work with a super motivated group of students on interesting problems, especially when it came to working with students from such diverse departments. Graham, on behalf of all of Thunderbots : thank you for your commitment to the team, willingness to mentor our younger students, and all the hard work you’ve put in over the years. We wish you nothing but the best for your future career at Microsoft and beyond.
