We are a bit taken aback by the weakness of this. Like you, we’ve only just seen it. We will study it, talk to the experts, and we will never stop pushing for a better workplace for food workers. - President Thomas Hesse and Secretary Treasurer Richelle Stewart #canlab #ufcw

As COVID-19 cases rise and more people find themselves missing work having to isolate due to exposure, awaiting testing results, or illness, go to this link for available federal government support through the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit. https://tinyurl.com/y7fmdg3k #CRSB #UFCW

Travis is a relatively new activist with UFCW 401. He is also a great example of what opportunities for growth can produce in the way of confidence building and finding one’s voice. He’s been a Shop Steward for nearly 2 years but became more active in his store throughout the course of Safeway/UFCW contract talks. Though not serving on the bargaining committee, he played a key role in his store. Engaging in discussions with his coworkers about the issues addressed in those ta...lks, strike votes, and then the subsequent vote on the company offer, all proved to be empowering and helped him to become a more vocal and effective Shop Steward. My union gives me opportunities to broaden my knowledge, making me more confident in my advocacy skills, he says. Travis says he’s looking forward to getting more involved and enjoys assisting his coworkers. Being an advocate for, and joining with, our co-workers in battles for fairness and equity are great ways to build an effective movement for change. And now everyone benefits from your new-found confidence and dedication, Travis. Solidarity! #MemberMonday #UFCW #401Solidarity

Data shows transgender people are more likely to be a target of abuse & violence in public, online, & at work. Today we reflect on the dangers that still exist and renew our commitment for change. Check out UFCW's work on this important human rights issue. https://tinyurl.com/yxvv9om3

Politicians are one thing, but for Dr. Deena Hinshaw, a doctor, to allow this to continue is absolutely shameful. We call on doctor Hinshaw to stand up to the politicians. Science must prevail! https://tinyurl.com/y5vzrbxs

Prolonging the pain is not a sound strategy. "One of the resolutions is also an aggressive "crush and contain" strategy, similar to those adopted by many nations across the world that have been successful at containing the rise in cases." https://tinyurl.com/yyokspk2

Participants Needed! Study on COVID-19 outbreaks in meat plants launched today! Alberta’s food workers have been greatly impacted by workplace outbreaks of COVID-19 since the Spring of 2020. As the union for Alberta’s food workers, we have been calling for independent investigations into these outbreaks in an effort to promote safer workplaces and to ensure the protection of our members’ workplace rights. Recently, we partnered with a group of researchers looking into the cau...ses and impacts of these outbreaks, and we want to ensure you are aware of an important opportunity to add your experiences and perspectives to this important research. In our view, this is one of the most important studies being undertaken on this topic, and we endorse it and encourage all UFCW Local 401 members to participate. View President Hesse's endorsement here: https://youtu.be/aF0Ld4svh6o For further information on the study and how you can participate, please visit our website here: https://gounion.ca/news/refugeehealthyyc-study/ #COVID-19 #foodworkers #safety
