I never tire of thumbing through this beautiful book and feeling so inspired. After all these years, it’s still one of my favourite books to relax with on a Sunday afternoon! This look is not a style, trend or fad, but a way to live an authentic, slow it down, life. Something that seems so poignant in the last 9 months of uncertainty. The look is exquisitely atmospheric, created by using muted distressed earthy colours, old gnarly wood antiques, weathered surfaces, hemp ...and linens and found foliage - a very undone look. One could almost refer to this aesthetic as insouciant. If I have to give it a name, I would probably say it’s the nearest thing to wabi sabi - imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. A dream!! #saturdayshopping I always loved traipsing the Christmas markets in the UK and Europe. One of my favourites, for quintessential charm, is the Markt (market) in Bruges, Belgium. The square has been used as a gathering place and market since 958!... During the Festive Season it becomes a magical wonderland. The superb Flemish architecture from Gothic to Renaissance to Neo Classical is lit up like a thousand Christmas trees with the Belfry Tower as the backdrop. Love it when clients send us photos of pieces they found at @uniquitiesyyc and have incorporated them into their own homes, whether traditional or modern. @mikegreen25 and Courtney @cparrie are wonderful clients. Although they have a modern lake home here in Calgary, they have over the years frequented Uniquities and purchased many lovely authentic European pieces that have added warmth and character. I love this photo of Mike sitting on a very traditional tufted kidney sha...ped chesterfield. The key to this piece and why it works so well, is the bleached oak frame and white linen upholstery. Courtney, a talented photographer and Mike, who recently hung up his skates, have found their other passion, (besides their 2 adorable kids), and that’s restoring a century old period home. Another beautiful November morning! We had a flood a few months ago that wrecked our roof. It took months to sort out the insurance due to the insane amount of homes in Southern Alberta that were damaged by flooding, hail and wind. So with delays and the forecast of snow, looks like we won’t be getting our new roof until next Spring. So plastic it is. If you look on the ceiling between the beams - that’s a hole under a patch! Fortunately, it did not damage our antique plank... flooring!! I’ve learnt to not sweat the small stuff. A remarkable accomplishment for moi! What repairs or renos do you have pending? PS for those of you who have asked about our plank flooring, we recovered it from a Victorian school in the UK. It is an old dense pine. Although technically Norfolk Pines are not really true pine trees, they do make lovely interior Christmas trees. But don’t throw them out after Christmas as they also make pretty house plants especially when placed in a gorgeous container like this antique hornbeam. This wonderful primitive barrel, was originally carved from a whole tree trunk and used as a storage container. Over a century of use has given it a rich patina and texture. I recently read a fascinating article by author and designer, Manuel Lima on our love and fascination of the most simplest of shapes - the circle. To summarize, he explains that the ultimate curvilinear shape being the circle embodies all of the attributes that attract us: it is a safe, gentle, pleasant, graceful, dreamy, and even beautiful, a shape that evokes calmness, peacefulness, and relaxation. Armoires, bibliotheques, enfilades and dressers ground a room. One of my own personal favourites is this substantial bleached oak French dresser from the early 1800s. Happy Halloween! I love Prague, it is such an amazing city, full of incredible architecture with something jaw dropping around every corner. It can be a creepy place too with the most macabre being The Sedlec Ossuary, a Roman Catholic church, more commonly known as The Bone Church at Kutná Hora. It is covered with over 40,000 human skeletons. The bones were bleached then ornately carved, and exquisitely decorate the whole church!... The skeletons are said to be made up of over 30,000 victims of the 14th century plague, thousands from the 15th century Crusades and the rest are those that died throughout the ages. The most spectacular carving has to be the chandelier that is made up of every single bone of the human body! We have over 20 antique doors in our home with only 4 original to the house. Prior to us being custodians of it, sadly there had been some original features removed for the sake of modernization. So one of our first tasks was to rid this lovely old period home of the ugly hollow doors and replace them with originals from @uniquitiesyyc This 19th C Welsh primary school door leads in to my office. I needed a door that would not encroach into 2 rooms, so sliders were the be...st option. By choosing a half glazed panel door, it allows lots of natural light into the workspace. We have quite a small kitchen in our 1912 home. It’s galley style with no room for a big sit up island. But we are fortunate in that we have a separate dining room and a breakfast area close to the kitchen. So we opted for an antique English work bench with original paint and we topped it with a slab of 1800’s Welsh slate. I love workbenches as an alternative to islands.
