Are you struggling to implement and fitness routine for yourself? There are some good reasons why that be a more daunting task than expected. "At the beginning of the new habit, you must set your expectations low enough to minimize the burden of exercising. Make it as easy and pleasant for yourself as possible. Once the habit is built, then you can make things more challenging."

Kickboxing is one of the best activities you can do for cross-training if you are a runner, cyclist, or any other type of athlete who does the vast majority of your work in the sagittal plane. It does a body good to twist, turn, and rotate. Bonus, kickboxing is amazing for self-defense. Leg kicks are excellent deterrents if someone invades your personal space. That person is far less likely to chase after you, too; it's difficult to run when your quad is spasming. You get all those benefits for $25 per class, Fridays at Panther Gym from 6:30-8:00 PM. In the interim, enjoy the soothing soundscape of leg kicks landing in rapid succession and the ambient sounds of a legitimate martial arts gym.

Most of these won't do anything for your punching power, but number five on the list is worth reading because it's still being done in gyms all over the world. It still doesn't work.

Did you know that the owner of Panther Gym was not only a professional fighter himself in the past, but also coaches his daughter now in pursuit of boxing glory? Read about Maddy's journey and how Benny is helping her take it. Boxing stories are the best stories.

Better a mask in the gym doing kickboxing than no mask on a couch watching Netflix. Small sacrifice to maintain training consistency. Grateful to Panther Gym for providing a clean and organized space to practice our craft.

A few of us went out on an unofficial group ride, but none of us adopted the forward standing sprint position. It was 100km of riding into 50km headwinds, so it probably wouldn't have helped anyway.

"Yes, some professional boxers still shadow box with dumbbells, but that just shows you what amazing athletes they are. They can do dumb things and still perform at the elite level. You can't. Be smarter than the guy who gets punched in the head a lot."

More women in boxing would be a good thing for both women and boxing. "Boxing is described by many as both a science and an art. When executed well, it feels like a dance with many challenging technical aspects. It is also very sociable. Participating means joining a global brotherhood or sisterhood melded by years of discipline. At the amateur, non-competitive level it is relatively safe, if properly supervised by trained coaches. It also feels like a natural activity something missing from life that has been restored." Marion Dunn Boxing stories are the best stories.

From Active for Life: "Child development experts say adventurous, risky play is essential for healthy development of children’s brains, bodies, and self-confidence. Yet for parents, it can be hard to tell when this kind of play crosses the line from daring to dangerous. How can parents determine what’s an acceptable risk and what’s plain reckless and life-threatening? And what can they do to facilitate acceptable risk in their children’s play?"

Choose according to effectiveness, not convenience or fashion. From the article: The most effective mask was the fitted N95. Three-layer surgical masks and cotton masks, which many people have been making at home, also performed well. Neck fleeces, also called gaiter masks and often used by runners, were the least effective. In fact, wearing a fleece mask resulted in a higher number of respiratory droplets because the material seemed to break down larger droplets into smaller... particles that are more easily carried away with air. Folded bandanas and knitted masks also performed poorly and did not offer much protection.

Exercise is medicine. "And perhaps the best news to come out of the new research, even for athletes who have already received a cancer diagnosis: all of that exercise is dialing back your chances of suffering a recurrence."

Worth reading in its entirety. The full article from TrainingPeaks: 2020. So far it’s been a strange year and it hasn’t been easy altering your life to accommodate a global Pandemic. No offense to LIVESTRONG, but chest workouts without push-ups could be completely replaced with a push-up workout. Push-ups are safer, more effective, and more accessible than every exercise in this article. Do yourself a favor and take the opposite approach: A grueling push-up chest workout that doesn't include a single dumbbell.

Why is exercise so readily ignored by policy makers?

Only been saying this forever. "The key finding: Subjects who did more types of exercise also accumulated more total exercise. In other words, although walking is good, it’s even better to mix walking with swimming, strength training, and dancing, for example. Or with yoga, pickleball and balance/core exercise sessions. Three might be the magic number. Americans who do three or more different activities per month are more likely to achieve 150 minutes of exercise per week than those doing just one or two activities." Do your cross-training.

Shoutout to the "I'm healthy and fit so all this paranoia about coronavirus doesn't apply to me." You're not as fit as Samuel is. Correction, was. He went from running over 30 marathons and competing in Ironmans to wondering if he's going to survive the illness. Another sad story in the ongoing saga that is our current reality.... "When COVID-19 cases began popping up across Canada, Saskatoon attorney and athlete David Samuel decided to treat it like the other physical challenges he'd overcome and started training to be in the best shape of his life. Now he's sick."

Shootstyle Fight Network shared this video with the following tagline: "Apparently, Shootboxer Hiroaki Suzuki eats liver shots for breakfast." Respectfully, these are body shots; none of these punches hit the liver. Number 17 or 18 came closer than any of them, but this fighter is most certainly not absorbing liver shots. ... A liver punch results in involuntary incapacitation. This is theater, not reality. It also explains why so few fighters can land liver shots using videos like this as training aids. These are decent enough body punches, but the liver is well and truly safe.

As we prepare for a return to boxing classes, we look to the psychological effect the pandemic has had on athletes within the general population. Social as a species, though we are, it can be difficult for some to accept the risk of contagion that comes with a return to training. The behavioral immune system will affect our willingness to be around others, and in what type of environments. Whether we are expressing a conformist opinion, judging the behavior of another, or trying to understand the value of different containment policies, we might ask ourselves whether our thoughts are really the result of rational reasoning, or whether they may have been shaped by an ancient response to disease that evolved over time before the discovery of germ theory.

"What more people need to realize, is that a moment of victory is temporary, but the long-term consequences of physical harm and stress on our bodies can be permanent." In other words, all glory is fleeting. The myth of the injured athlete going out for one final play and scoring the game winning goal do far more harm than good. It is compelling theater, to be sure, but does nothing for the athletes who try to follow suit. "It is also important to consider the implications th...at stories about elite athletes playing through injury can have in youth sport. The more such stories are celebrated in the media, the more young athletes and social agents will feel as though they should play through injuries to be considered a real athlete." Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC)

"You adapt. You overcome. You improvise." Good coaching is about accepting the circumstances for what they are and still getting the work done.

Never underestimate the power of suggestion. "Research on the placebo effect indicates that words about the effectiveness of an intervention significantly affect the outcome on performance. For example, after ingesting caffeine, athletes run faster when they are told it is caffeine than when they are told it is a placebo. Similarly, when athletes ingest a placebo, they run faster when they are told it will improve performance than when they are told that it will worsen performance. If athletes are told that they received an intervention that significantly improves performance, they are more likely to exhibit greater improvements in performance than if they are told it is benign."

There are numerous outdoor activities available to people wanting to exercise in lower risk environments than the typical gym offers. As much fun as training in the gym can be, training outside is equally productive and often more memorable. The City of Edmonton has several options if your gym doesn’t offer outdoor alternatives.

Motivated athletes recover from injuries faster, return to play smarter, and don't let their injuries define them. Great coaches know how to foster motivation and resilience in their athletes so that obstacles like injuries are just part of the athletic journey, not the end of it.

Who wants to be a better version of themselves on September 1st than they are on July 1st? It takes an average of 66 days to reach automaticity in a new behavior. There are 62 days in July and August.... If you think about a behavior you would like to cultivate, start it today, maintain it through the summer, then you will have a newly formed habit by the Labor Day holiday. Make a new healthy habit: Decide on a behavior that you would like to adopt for your health. Choose a simple action that will get you towards this behavior that you can do on a daily basis. Plan when and where you will do your chosen action. Be consistent. Choose a time and place that you encounter every day of the week that can help trigger your new positive behavior. Every time you encounter that time and place, act on the behavior. It will get easier with time as you come to recognize both your trigger and the behavior that goes with it, as well as the positive feelings that come with completing it. Within two months, you should find you are doing the behavior automatically without even having to think about it. Congratulations, you’ve made a healthy habit just by doing something meaningful every day this summer. All you have to do is choose.

"To summarize this article, the lifts are not dangerous. Doing them wrong is. They are not the end-all, be-all of anything. (However, for what it’s worth, when the quick lifts were the rule rather than the exception, rotator cuff injuries were few and far between) Weightlifting is a method of getting stronger and more explosive. Like other strength programs, it has certain benefits. And like others, it has requirements to get the most out of it, most notably good basic instruction."
