We are back with our Friday highlights again this week with Tyler Edwards, a masters student in the Anderson lab! Keep in mind it is not too late to submit a hi...ghlight - all you have to do is fill out this form https://forms.gle/9DrYr2NrDuEkgR1D6 and dm/email us some pictures of your research! Name: Tyler Edwards Program enrolled in: M.Sc. Advisor:Dr. Gary Anderson Research Topic: Using olfaction to understand dietary preferences of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens). How did you get involved with your advisor? I was referred to Dr. Anderson from another professor, and after a few conversations it was evident that Dr. Anderson and his lab were a great fit for me. Typical day in the lab: Right now I have 5 electro-olfactogram (EOG) runs a week: one Monday and two each Wednesday and Friday. For each EOG run, I get in early in the morning to prepare my solutions for the day and make sure everything is flowing right and set up for the EOG. Then I retrieve a Lake Sturgeon from animal holding and anesthetize it before bringing it up to the lab for experimentation. After the experiment I euthanize the fish and remove the olfactory bulb (part of the brain) to store for future RNA studies. Significance of research: This research will provide insight into the evolution of olfaction in fishes, and further work will assist in the development of dietary formulations for the culturing of Lake Sturgeon. Conservation aquaculture and stock enhancement are key strategies in the conservation of Lake Sturgeon across its natural range. Introduction of preferred wild type dietary cues in formulated diets will enhance growth and survival during early life stages in a hatchery environment and better prepare fish for appropriate responses to relevant dietary cues when released into the natural environment. Career aspirations: I thoroughly enjoy research and would like to do some Ph.D work abroad, but I am still figuring out future plans. Fun Fact: I started my undergraduate degree taking random first year courses to find something that appealed to me. It wasn’t until my second year that I enrolled in biology and chemistry that I found what I enjoyed an

Congratulations to Faculty of Science graduate Taylor Morriseau, [BSc(Hons)/17] 2020 Distinguished Outstanding Young Alumn Award recipient! Who continuously asks herself: Where am I going to be the most use? ... Morriseau feels the responsibility to not only do community-driven research, but to mentor other Indigenous youth trying to knock down barriers in STEM fields through outreach initiatives like the Neechiwaken Indigenous Peer Mentorship, Biomedical Youth and Children Rising Mentorship programs. UM WAS THE PLACE WHERE Taylor Morriseau was inspired to explore her identity as a person, a scientist and a mentor, and then she bridged the three to address issues affecting Indigenous communities. It all began in the Faculty of Science, with her passion for genetics and microbiology. It just blossomed from there, she says. Sit in on a conversation with Dr. Catherine Cook [MD/87, MSc/03] and Taylor Morriseau.
