Great opportunity for emerging artists!
Elly Heise's installation "Related Repose" is installed in The Bed Room as a part of our latest exhibition. The artist utilizes an oak bed from the Legacy's collection to anchor fabric panels of altered photographs from Heise's own archive. "Much like the historic bed, the fabric photograph suggests something beyond its physicality. It is indicative of a space somewhere between psychological and physical, a membrane existing somewhere between the physical world and the imaginative. I see the represented spaces within Related Repose as a place where our memories and identifying narratives reside, a fluid, subjective, and intangible place." https://lifestories.uvic.ca/exhibits/show/legacy/bedroom
Over the past five years, Legacy has been working to address the lack of representation of works by Indigenous women and two-spirit artists in our collection. This year Legacy has purchased new works by five Indigenous artists thanks to the financial support of the Salish Weave Collection of George and Christiane Smyth. Learn more about the works in our New Acquisitions update: https://www.uvic.ca/legacygall//new-acquisitions/index.php

We've been busy this week installing a new exhibition opening Wednesday, December 2nd - Life Stories. Art shapes our life stories, our sense of self and our relationships, as we journey through the life stages: Beginnings, Childhood, Coming of Age, Maturity, Later Life, and Passages. Interwoven with the artworks are voices of writers, artists, scholars, and curators offering diverse perspectives on significant stages informing our lives. Join us next week with your masks and ...household bubble! Jack Wilkinson, Girl In Blue Flowered Nightgown. 1972-1975. Gift of Dr. Myfanwy Spencer Pavelic.

There is only one more week to view Maureen Gruben's TUKTUYAQTUUQ (Caribou Crossing) at the Legacy! See pieces that engage with the caribou, like "Clicked a Dance", made up of 32 caribou hooves coated in aluminum tape to reflect the light, before the exhibition closes on November 14th.
Next Thursday, Dr. Claxton will be speaking and answering questions at our online tour and curator's discussion of our current exhibition To Fish As Formerly: A Story of Straits Salish Resurgence! XEMOLTW Dr. Nick Claxton teaches at UVic in the Department of Child and Youth Care. His research is centered on the revitalization and resurgence of Indigenous knowledges through community-based and land-based healing. Nick’s doctoral research focused on the revitalization of his... community’s traditional fishing practice. His doctoral research project focused on the revitalization and restoration of the SXOLE during which he worked to pull together the disappearing knowledge of the SXOLE, reinvigorate cross border cooperation between the WSÁNE and their Xwelemi relatives, and coordinate the community-based creation and fishing of the first SXOLE on Canadian waters in 100 years. This project involved reconnecting with many elders, youth, and community members. It marked the beginning of a longer-term journey of resurgence and intergenerational resilience that continues. Drawing from Indigenous cultural and oral histories and colonial historical sources, Katie focused on capturing the history of the Reef Net and its resurgence in the exhibition text, artworks and objects. Katie is currently on maternity leave from her position as Community Engagement Coordinator at UVic Legacy Galleries.
