Uxbridge Trails 27.10.2020

Hello Fellow Dog Lovers: Just a friendly reminder to please poop and scoop on the trails! With the snow on the ground it is difficult to see where the edge of the trail is and where the forest begins, so we are finding that more people are not picking up after their dogs thinking the dog has gone off the trail far enough, BUT this is not the case. Snow hides a lot, but it does melt and with that melt there is dog poop! We all love to share the trails with or without our fu...rry friends, but nobody likes to share the trails with our furry friends poop. So please take the minute it takes to pick up after your pooch and take it with you, it is our responsibility as a dog owner! These are our trails to keep clean and enjoy for all! Thank you. -The Trails Coordinating Committee

Reminder to all dog lovers and owners, PLEASE clean up after your dog on the trails, bag it and take it out with you! With the snow on the ground it makes the walking trail smaller and you may think your dog is off the trail, BUT when the snow melts, NOPE! Be a proud owner and think of other people and yourself, nobody likes to step in poop!

Attention users of the O'Neil Trail... A small fencing project will be completed this week in the south-east corner of the Fields of Uxbridge (O'Neil Trail). Please use caution as you may encounter a small construction crew and their machinery as you walk through the trail.

Fellow Forest Users, On my ride through the main forest today I noticed there are quite a few short cuts to corners being created in the trails. For many of us... getting in to the woods is a chance to get away from the noise and chaos of daily life as well as being submersed in the beauty of the forest that we are fortunate to have access to. What immediately hit me was all these extra little trails/short cuts seemed to take away from that beauty. With the increasing population in Durham Region there will be an increase in users, these little short cuts will soon become much larger. When new single track trails are conceptualized it is a long process to get them approved and built, and it can happen that a trail might be moved 10’ due to a tree or some feature that the land manager wants to preserve, these small additions might be damaging a feature or just as importantly killing underbrush. If you find there is a section of trail that you find difficult to navigate be it on foot or bike, please take your time walking that section. If on a bike to walk your bike over it will show you the how the bike will roll over it. If on foot, you will hopefully see a way through it safely if taking your time. If you prefer to ride in a straight line, stick to the double track, there is plenty in the forest as well. Thanks,

Giant Hog Weed has been found on the O'Neil Trail along side of the creek inside the Fields of Uxbridge. These plants are extremely toxic and will cause severe burns. They've been marked off with caution tape. Please do not touch these plants - we are working on having these plants destroyed safely.

For Immediate Release Aug 14, 2018 Bear Sighting in Downtown Uxbridge The Township of Uxbridge would like to caution residents about a small black bear that has been sighted in downtown Uxbridge. Animal Control Officers, local Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources have been notified.... Please be aware of your surroundings when outdoors and keep pets on a leash. Generally, bears want to avoid humans as they roam looking for food. If you encounter a bear and feel it poses an immediate threat to your personal safety or the safety of others, call 911. Otherwise, call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327. The Municipality asks that residents put garbage out only on the morning of garbage day, not the night before. Food residue in barbeques and bird feeders are two other sources of bear-attractants. For more information on bear safety please visit https://www.ontario.ca/pa/prevent-bear-encounters-bear-wise. -30-

Work Slated to Continue on Barton Farms’ Storm water Pond this week. The Barton Farm pond acts as a buffer to hold and clean storm water prior to it being released into the Uxbridge Brook. Over time, storm water ponds fill with sediment and need to be cleaned for optimal health of the pond and surrounding environment. The sediment from the pond will be removed, leaving the pond deeper and better able to clean the water and support localized habitat. Stage one of the Barton Fa...rms Pond work was completed several weeks ago. Stage two is scheduled to start this week. Removal of the silt will be piled on the shore of the pond to dry out and will be removed from site once it has drained. Fencing will be installed around the work site. Please be advised that the ground around the pond is very unstable and dangerous. Please supervise children and pets playing in this area, observe trail closures, and refrain from walking near the pond’s edge.
