Clarification is needed on CDC's public safety announcement about cruises... Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health officials had made an announcement advising that people do not go on cruises in the wake of the novel virus that causes COVID-19, currently epidemic in some European countries, including China, Korea and Italy. PLEASE NOTE: what they failed to clarify was that the announcement was made in the context of destination cruise liners that ...bring together people from the international population for multiple days and nights. It was not referring to 3 to 4 hour events organized on a local harbour boat/ship, both of which often use the word "cruise" in their event tags and web domain names to indicate events booked on a boat venue for a tour around the local harbour's waterways. As with any virus that usually surfaces during the winter and spring, to protect ourselves and others we advise that each and every individual practice good hygiene as follows: Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose. Both when returning from and going out to public places, wash and rub your hands thoroughly (min 30 seconds) with soap and water to include the back of your hands. Do this also after using the restroom/toilet and before eating a meal. If soap and water are not accessable, keep handy a personal supply of hand sanitizer, using a nickel to a quarter sized amount rub it vigorously throughout the hands until it has evaporated. If you happen to have a cough and/or runny nose for any other reason not caused by a viral infection, when going out make it a practice to have handy a clean hankercheif or tissue to couph into or wipe your nose on. If you suspect you might have a viral infection, please stay home. When you must go out to seek medical attention or obtain an emergency supply that cannot be delivered, please cover your mouth and nose with a hospital-grade mask or a clean thick close-knit scarf. If the fabric of the scarf is thin, fold mulitple times to acheive similar thickness. People who should be extra cautious about contracting a virus are those who are advanced in years or have a compromised immune system. Please respect their special needs to be protected from viruses that can prove fatal to them. Here are some guidelines that the CDC proposes to those planning a large community event to prepare for and prevent the spread of COVID-19, if and when the virus reaches their community. Most of the guidelines can be adopted in planning for smaller events such as boat dance parties and company or corporate events. https://www.cdc.gov//mass-gatherings-ready-for-covid-19.ht We hope the clarification to the CDC announcement and tips to protect yourself and others from the spread of viruses will arm you with both practical knowledge and confidence to those attending or planning an event or party for the upcoming season.
