It's Waste Reduction Week in Canada and today is E-Waste Wednesday! E-Waste is a hugely important part of the waste conversation, especially as we look at the statistics. For example, the amount of e-waste in 2019 reached 53.6 million metric tonnes, which is the equivalent weight of 350 cruise ships and is an increase of 21% compared to five years ago. So what can we do about it? Buy electronics that are made to last and meant to be reused or refurbished. Always recycle... your unwanted electronic equipment, including charger cables, batteries and lights. Shop smart; do you really need another device? Does the manufacturer or store offer a recycling or trade-in program? #DYK today is National LED Lighting Day and we thought we'd share one of our brags with you to mark the occasion! An empty stage at VFS is as rare as a unicorn but we managed to get this interior shot of Stage J3 after our new LED lighting was installed! LED lighting makes a huge difference...There's no warm-up time and it has what is known as an "instant on" function. This means that as soon as you enter the space, you have full intensity light...instantly! This benefits... the crew using the space, as well as our environment! More LED facts: - A longer lifespan means lower carbon emissions. LED Lights last up to six times longer than other types of lights, reducing the requirement for frequent replacements. Fewer lights = fewer resources needed for manufacturing processes, packaging materials and transportation. - Amazingly, 95 percent of an LED light is recyclable! Plus they don't contain mercury, unlike other compact fluorescent lamps. - LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent lights. 95% of the energy in LEDs is converted into light and only 5% is wasted as heat. This is compared to fluorescent lights which convert 95% of energy to heat and only 5% into light! - The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the widespread use of LEDs in residential and commercial applications over the next 20 years will save about $265 billion, will prevent the need for constructing new power plants, and reduce the electricity demand of lighting by 33%! #VancouverFilmStudios #FilmCarbonNeutral #VFSSustainability #LEDLights #NationalLEDDay #VancouverFilm #BTS
