We were just informed that CFAX Santas Anonymous Society just granted VLC $2,500.00 towards our Kids E-Reading Book Club program. We are dependent upon local funding to help subsidize our free services, so it is always wonderful to get such great news! Three cheers for the CFAX Santas Anonymous Society!
Ever wonder why some kids (and adults) are afraid of math? Here is a clue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7snnRaC4t5c
Here is another video showing the importance of libraries throughout the ages, but this time from Timbuktu! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40ehHbdi95o
Interesting opinion piece in the Times Colonist, especially for you educators out there. https://www.timescolonist.com//geoff-johnson-story-of-quee
The local libraries are starting to open up again. I know that there are many of you out there that miss having access to this important service. Here is a little video to remind us of the historic importance of libraries throughout the civilizations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvWncVbXfJ0
VLC is so fortunate to receive a donation of $10,000.00 from Reitmans. It was all part of their #wearyousupport campaign where 7 known Canadians selected charities to support. Two-time winner of the Giller Prize for her books Washington Black and Half Blood Blues, Esi Edugyan, chose Victoria Literacy Connection! Scroll down on the link below, and you will find Ms. Edugyan's podcast hosted by Reitmans, where she talks a bit about her novels, the t-shirt design and a bit about ...why she chose VLC. Did you know she was a volunteer tutor with us 8 years ago? She expressed how rewarding this experience was for her. All the more reason to volunteer for VLC! https://www.reitmans.com/en/diversity Thank you Esi Edugyan and thank you Reitmans! As with all donations we receive, the funds are put to good use to support literacy programming in #GreaterVictoria. #feelinggrateful
A great literacy resource for girls who have technical interests. Such female talents need to be encouraged! https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=13914
VLC is starting a new adult computer literacy program and needs volunteers to support individuals with their basic computer and/or cell phone needs. For just 1-3 hours a week of your time online, you can help community members connect with their network and be more included in our modern technological world.
